COOK, Minn. -- A missing 72-year-old Cook man has been found after spending the night in his vehicle, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported on Tuesday.
GRAND FORKS -- Most of the Red River Valley region had its coldest Christmas in more than two decades this year, National Weather Service officials said Monday. In Grand Forks, with an early-morning low of negative 19 and a high of negative 9 degrees it was the coldest since Christmas 1996, which had a low and high of negative 25 and negative 13 degrees, respectively.

Those stories dominated the list of the top news stories in Minnesota for 2017 as voted on by several editors at Forum Communications Co. newspapers in the state. Topping the list was the resignation of Sen. Al Franken, who announced earlier this month that he would step down after eight women made public allegations of sexual harassment.
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. -- Investigators have identified a Florida man who was found dead inside a burning vehicle this week in the parking lot of a Devils Lake Walmart. Milton Feliciano, 34, was recovered from the burning car that was extinguished Wednesday evening, Devils Lake Police Chief Joseph Knowski said Friday. There is no foul play suspected in the case, Knowski said, adding the incident doesn’t appear to be the result of a criminal act.
CROSBY, Minn. —Law enforcement officials say they discovered evidence of a meth lab Thursday at a trailer park in Crosby while executing a search warrant. Agents from the Lakes Area Drug Investigation Division and the Crow Wing County Tactical Response Team searched the Crosby home about 4:50 p.m. Thursday in Townsend Trailer Park. The search warrant was in connection to an ongoing drug investigation involving the manufacture and sale of meth.

MOORHEAD, Minn. — A 30-year-old Breckenridge, Minn., man was sentenced in Clay County District Court on Thursday, Dec. 21, to five years and 10 month in prison for his guilty plea to one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct involving someone under age 16. Kevin H. Silvernail initially faced three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. The conduct occurred in Moorhead, according to court documents. The victim told investigators Silvernail smoked meth and talked the victim into trying it.
WASHINGTON—Minnesota gets a new U.S. senator on Jan. 3. A spokesman for U.S. Sen. Al Franken said on Wednesday, Dec. 20, that the senator will resign on Jan. 2. Minnesota Lt. Gov. Tina Smith is to be sworn in the next day. The announcement puts to rest rumors that Franken will decide to stay in office after announcing two weeks ago that he would resign over sexual misconduct allegations. At the time, he only said he would leave the Senate "in coming weeks." That produced speculation that he may opt to remain in office.
Carson Wentz and Adam Thielen, who played football for two area high schools, have been selected to play in the National Football League's Pro Bowl. Wentz, a second-year quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, and Thielen, a fourth-year wide receiver for the Minnesota Vikings, were among those named to the NFC team's starting roster. Wentz played high school football at Bismarck (N.D.) Century and college football at North Dakota State. Thielen played high school football at Detroit Lakes (Minn.) and college football at Minnesota State-Mankato.
COHASSET, Minn. - A Cohasset woman died Saturday when the ATV she was riding fell through the ice on a rural Itasca County lake. The body of Bernice Elaine Kane of Cohasset was recovered from the waters of Rice Lake, near Cohasset, on Sunday afternoon, the Itasca County Sheriff's Office reported; she is believed to have died from drowning. The Sheriff's Office responded at about 5:45 p.m. Saturday to a report of an ATV falling through the ice; deputies discovered that two people had been on the ATV.
