SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Authorities in Superior evacuated a Holiday Inn Express and about 20 nearby homes for nearly five hours Monday night after a suspicious item was left at the hot front desk. A bomb squad from central Wisconsin eventually determined it was not an explosive device.
MOORHEAD, Minn. — A former Minnesota State University Moorhead football player was sentenced to 60 days in jail Monday after pleading guilty in connection with charges he raped a fellow student in his campus dorm room last fall. Zachary Ty Hilliard of Erie, Colo., was also sentenced in Clay County District Court to serve two years of supervised probation as part of a plea deal that gives him credit for the 37 days he already served.
JASPER, Minn. -- Two women are dead after being consumed in a hog barn fire near Jasper in southwest Minnesota on Monday morning. Sharla Drew, 50, and Kristy Giesler, 32, both of Jasper, died when a barn the two were inside caught on fire. A statement from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office said employees of the farm were pressure washing inside the barn when the fire started.

VIRGINIA, Minn. -- An Iron Range man was charged Monday with a brutal beating that left a man described as his "best friend" dead at a residence here last week. Michael Henry Richard Daufelt, 39, was charged in State District Court with second-degree murder.
A 62-year-old woman was rescued Saturday after falling overboard on Serpent Lake in Crosby, the Crow Wing Sheriff's Office reported. Deputies were called at 11:30 a.m. of someone hollering for help and an unoccupied boat doing circles on Serpent Lake in Crosby. It was discovered that Laurie Jenniges of Long Lake had been operating the boat and had fallen overboard. Jenniges was not wearing a life jacket at the time.
AITKIN - A 77-year-old Aitkin man died Saturday afternoon while fishing on Farm Island Lake south of Aitkin, the Aitkin County Sheriff's Officer reported. Kenneth Arnold Pomeroy was a passenger fishing from a boat when a wave hit the boat, causing Pomeroy to go overboard. Pomeroy was wearing a lifejacket, but was reported to have been underwater for 30-45 seconds. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. Autopsy results are pending with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office. The incident remains under investigation by the Aitkin County Sheriff's Office.
SOUDAN, Minn. -- Construction began Friday on a campground at the once-controversial Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park in northeastern Minnesota that will accommodate more than 250 people nightly in tents and RVs, the Department of Natural Resources said. The campground at Minnesota’s newest state park -- and the first new park in 30 years -- is expected to open in fall 2016.
ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota Senate on Friday voted overwhelmingly to name part of Minnesota 149 the Officer Scott Patrick Memorial highway and a stretch of Minnesota 36 in Maplewood the Sgt. Joseph Bergeron Memorial highway. Patrick and Bergeron were police officers killed in the line of duty in recent years.
