LANESBORO, Minn. -- A third deer infected with chronic wasting disease has been discovered in southeastern Minnesota, according to the Department of Natural Resources. A hunter harvested the deer in mid-November about 5 miles north of the two previously reported infected deer, which were killed about 4 miles west of Lanesboro. An area taxidermist later provided a sample for testing to the DNR.
JORDAN, Minn. – A 53-year-old New London man was killed in a car crash south of Jordan on Monday, Dec. 26. The name of the individual has not been released by the Minnesota State Patrol.
PERHAM, Minn. -- A rural Perham man was injured Sunday, Dec. 25, when a fish house fire spread to nearby residences. According to a report released by the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office: Perham area fire crews and members of the sheriff’s office were called about 6:30 a.m. Sunday to the rural Perham residence of Paul Krause, 62, where a fire in a fish house on dry land spread to nearby structures.
ST. PAUL — A Christmas Eve fire started by unattended candles rendered a home in St. Paul’s Summit-University neighborhood uninhabitable. The Dec. 24 fire broke out at a residence in the 500 block of Mackubin Street. St. Paul Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard said the family lit some candles on a hutch in the living room and left for dinner at a neighbor’s. The candles likely set some nearby holiday greenery on fire. When the family returned shortly after 10 p.m., the fire had spread through the house.
FRAZEE, Minn.—One person died and another was critically injured when a vehicle struck two pedestrians early Sunday, Dec. 25, on Highway 29 about five miles north of Frazee, according to a report released by Becker County Sheriff Todd Glander. According to the report: A vehicle driven by Alexis Birky, 20, of Frazee, was driving southbound on the highway about 6 a.m. Sunday, when her vehicle collided with two people who were walking in the southbound lane of the highway.
FARGO -- A 26-year-old man was found dying from stab wounds at a Fargo home early Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, and a 31-year-old Fargo man is in jail for homicide. No motive is known for the crime at 1321 17th Ave. S., just west of Duane’s House of Pizza, said Fargo Police Deputy Chief Joe Anderson.
DULUTH — Enbridge is giving itself some breathing room before closing on a deal to buy a stake in the contentious and stalled Dakota Access pipeline. Enbridge Energy Partners L.P. and its joint venture partner Marathon Petroleum Corp. now have until March 31 to back out of the deal, according to a recent Securities and Exchange Commission filing. The previous deadline to terminate the sale was Dec. 31.
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. — Timothy M. Churchwell has been appointed as a judge in Minnesota’s Seventh Judicial District. Churchwell will replace David R. Battey, and will be chambered at Alexandria. Battey, who was appointed by Gov. Arne Carlson in 1995, is retiring on Jan. 3.
BENSON, Minn. -- The Swift County Sheriff's Office in Minnesota is investigating the death of a 57-year-old rural Benson man who was found last Sunday, Dec. 18, near the Lake Hassel access north of Benson in western Minnesota.. It’s believed he may have died due to the cold weather. A passerby discovered the body of Michael Fennel near a vehicle, according to Sheriff John Holtz.
CALLAWAY, Minn. -- Charges are pending for a Waubun man who suffered a gunshot wound to the face earlier this week at a home in Callaway, in Becker County. Details released are sketchy, including why the man shot was charged. In the incident, around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, officers responding to a call found William J. Keezer, 38, at the Callaway home and later transported him to a hospital in Detroit Lakes before he was transferred to Fargo with injuries that weren’t life-threatening.
