Jeremy Tieken has always wanted to go muskie fishing because he hadn’t caught one yet. That all changed Nov. 1. He and his father, Daniel, went out on an area lake with Kevin Cochran’s Musky Guide Service out of Bemidji for Jeremy’s eighth birthday. “He is very passionate and has a skill level above average for an 8-year-old fisherman,” his dad said. So he Googled a fishing service and landed Cochran. They had planned to hit the lakes on Oct. 30, but due to conflicting schedules, they changed it to Nov. 1.
ST. PAUL -- More than 300 Minnesota law enforcement agencies will be working overtime this holiday season to try to prevent drunken driving. The percentage of drunk-driving related deaths compared with total traffic fatalities is significantly higher for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday periods than other major holidays during at least the past four years, said the Minnesota Department of Public Safety which is coordinating the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” effort.
A Bemidji woman was injured in a two-vehicle collision Sunday morning in Beltrami County. Emily Helgeson, 37, was southbound on U.S. Highway 71 at the intersection of Town Hall Road at about 10:50 a.m. when her 2000 Dodge Caravan was struck by a 2003 GMC Sierra operated by Dennis Hanks, 38, Bemidji. The State Patrol said Hanks, who was westbound on Town Hall Road, failed to yield to oncoming traffic. The crash occurred northeast of Bemidji.
A Grand Forks was injured in a one-vehicle rollover on an icy U.S. Highway 2 near Bemidji. Minnesota State Patrol reported that Steven Sly, 63, was driving a 2003 Ford F150 eastbound on Highway 2 shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday, when he lost control of the pickup, which then entered the median and rolled. The rollover occurred just west of Bemidji.
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A Spirit Airlines flight bound for Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was diverted when a phone conversation by a passenger was mistaken for a bomb threat. Flight 596 took off at 9:06 p.m. Thursday night from Ft. Lauderdale but returned about 15 minutes later, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.
THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. -- A Thief River Falls woman has been cited after the SUV she was driving slid through an intersection and collided with a school bus Thursday, leaving six students with minor injuries. Police Chief Dick Wittenberg said the six students went to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
A man and woman were arrested late Monday night after a Polk County deputy sheriff discovered an apparent burglary in progress at an unoccupied farm near McIntosh, Minn. The Polk County Sheriff’s Department reports that the deputy was conducting a security check at the farm at about 11:30 p.m. Monday when he saw the couple inside the residence. The couple, both from the Bemidji area, were arrested and transported to Tri-County Corrections in Crookston, where they are facing burglary charges.

GLENWOOD, Minn, -- An investigation is underway to determine how a deer hunter from Glenwood died Friday. The Pope County Sheriff’s Office identified him as Jon Donald Kloos, 40, of rural Glenwood. In a statement issued Monday, Sheriff Tim Riley said a canoe was discovered Friday in approximately 10 feet of water and is believed to have been used by Kloos.
MOUNTAIN IRON, Minn. – A 19-year-old Cook man died in a fireworks accident in northern Minnesota on Friday morning. A mortar-style firework was placed on top of a hard hat Trevor Reichel, of Cook, was wearing in a backyard on the 5600 block of Oriole Avenue in Mountain Iron, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. Reichel was injured after the firework went off and he was transported to Essentia Health-Virginia. He then was airlifted to Essentia Health-St.
