GLENWOOD, Minn, -- An investigation is underway to determine how a deer hunter from Glenwood died Friday. The Pope County Sheriff’s Office identified him as Jon Donald Kloos, 40, of rural Glenwood. In a statement issued Monday, Sheriff Tim Riley said a canoe was discovered Friday in approximately 10 feet of water and is believed to have been used by Kloos.
MOUNTAIN IRON, Minn. – A 19-year-old Cook man died in a fireworks accident in northern Minnesota on Friday morning. A mortar-style firework was placed on top of a hard hat Trevor Reichel, of Cook, was wearing in a backyard on the 5600 block of Oriole Avenue in Mountain Iron, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. Reichel was injured after the firework went off and he was transported to Essentia Health-Virginia. He then was airlifted to Essentia Health-St.
LAKE MILLE LACS, Minn. -- A Minnesota fisherman might have just hooked a world record muskie using a fly. Robert Hawkins, who owns Bob Mitchell’s Fly Shop in Lake Elmo, said on his Facebook page he “caught a giant” on Lake Mille Lacs earlier this week. The fish measures 57 inches long and is pending as a world record, said Hawkins.
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. -- A trapper who had not been seen for about three weeks was found dead Friday in a slough near Alexandria. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office did not release the name of the 63-year-old man. A conservation officer found the man partially submerged in the water next to a small kayak and trapping equipment, a release from the sheriff’s office said.
WILLMAR, Minn. -- The Willmar City Council voted unanimously Friday to offer the city administrator’s job to Thief River Falls City Administrator Larry Kruse and authorized search consultant Gary Weiers to negotiate a contract. The council set the salary range at $115,000 to $135,000. Council members said they were comfortable with Kruse, and they cited Kruse’s 30 years of government service and ability to build consensus and collaboration.
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. -- Parents of a Fergus Falls teen who drowned on a church youth trip two years ago have reached a settlement with the church and the company the church rented two houseboats from. Briggs Anderson, 14, drowned July 29, 2013, while on a youth trip with Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church to Rainy Lake, on the U.S.-Canada border near International Falls, Minn.

In partnership with his brothers, Bruce Dayton expanded the Dayton Co. from one department store their father and grandfather owned in Minneapolis into chains of nationally known stores. ST. PAUL -- Federal authorities are ready to give farmers in Minnesota and nine other states money to help save the iconic monarch butterfly. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Thursday that it has $4 million for the program next year to help farmers and ranchers make changes on their land to help the butterfly that is declining in numbers.
ST. PAUL -- A Minnesota landlord who rents to a homeless veteran could get $1,000. The state Veterans' Affairs Department and community leaders across Minnesota committed earlier this year to end veteran homelessness before 2016. The $1,000 incentive is part of the effort.
