HIBBING, Minn. -- A sexual assault allegation led to the beheading of a 20-year-old Hibbing man last week in rural Itasca County, according to murder charges filed Wednesday. Authorities said David Alexander Haiman also was beaten with a baseball bat and stabbed with a machete after being lured to a wooded area in the Ball Club community by the boyfriend of the alleged sexual assault victim. The suspect, 35-year-old Joseph Christen Thoresen of Grand Rapids, was arraigned Wednesday in State District Court on an intentional second-degree murder charge.
A 14-year-old Barnes, Wis., girl reported missing Tuesday night was found dead early Wednesday, the apparent victim of an all-terrain vehicle crash. The Bayfield County Sheriff's Office reported that the girl, whose name was not released Wednesday pending notification of family, was reported missing at about 10 p.m. Tuesday; she left her home earlier in the day on an ATV and had not been seen by her family since.
A Superior man accused of threatening a judge made his initial appearance earlier this month in Douglas County Circuit Court. A special prosecutor was appointed to handle the case because the suspect also allegedly threatened the district attorney.

DETROIT LAKES -- A Park Rapids man is in the Becker County jail after allegedly assaulting a woman and then chasing around a man, who tried to intervene, around with a hatchet. Wayne Lee Patton, 48, is charged with three felonies - assault with a dangerous weapon and two domestic assault charges.
PARK RAPIDS -- A head-on collision south of Mahnomen claimed the life of a Park Rapids man and seriously injured his passenger early Friday morning. A freightliner tractor trailer was traveling south on Highway 59 when a Nissan Altima traveling northbound crossed the centerline in the southbound lanes and collided with the semi-tractor trailer, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
MOORHEAD, Minn. — A driver's drunken attempt to do a "doughnut" at a Felton bonfire ended up with two people being struck by the vehicle, according to documents filed in Clay County District Court. The incident occurred Friday, June 17, when a vehicle entered the yard of a Felton, Minn., residence with its horn honking and the driver attempting to do a "doughnut" near where a group of people were milling about a bonfire, according to witness accounts in court records.
