CROSBY, Minn. — Crosby Mayor Jim Hunter was booked into the Crow Wing County jail on suspicion of three felonies after his arrest Friday, March 10. Jail records show Hunter, 68, was booked into jail on suspicion of theft by swindle, second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and lawful gambling fraud crimes. Crosby Police Chief Kim Coughlin confirmed the arrest Friday, but could not immediately provide further details. Hunter is the owner of CI Auto Crosby, JH Trucking and Hunter Nelson rental properties. He is the former owner of Buy Sell Trade.
OSAKIS, Minn. -- An investigation into credit card fraud and swindle in Osakis has led to felony drug charges. Denise Carol Waldvogel, 47, of Osakis was charged Dec. 31, 2016, with felony theft by swindle. Her husband, Curtis Dale Waldvogel, 45, was charged with felony credit card fraud on March 1 and two drug-related counts on Feb. 1. Those counts include third-degree possession of meth in excess of 10 grams, about one-third of an ounce, and fifth-degree possession of marijuana.
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. -- An Alexandria man was arrested in Benton County after a routine traffic stop and is facing charges of possessing counterfeit currency. According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, James Earl Meyer, 53, attempted to use a counterfeit $100 bill at Hardware Hank in Rice about 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7.
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's daughter and son-in-law are renting a house from the Chilean family that owns the Twin Metals copper mining project proposed near Ely, according to a report Wednesday in the Wall Street Journal. The report said Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner are renting a Washington home owned by Chilean billionaire Andronico Luksic, whose family controls Antofagasta, the Chilean global mining giant that owns a 100 percent interest in the Twin Metals project.
ST. PAUL -- A deputy commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Commerce was among several men arrested in an undercover prostitution sting in St. Paul. Police took Michael Shane Deal, 46, of Litchfield into custody on Tuesday, according to a police report. Deal, who could not immediately be reached for comment on Wednesday, is deputy commissioner of the state commerce department’s financial institutions division.
GRAND FORKS -- A retired member of Norway’s Parliament will give a talk, “Norway, NATO and Trump,” Thursday at the University of North Dakota. Odd Einar Dorum will focus on the importance of NATO to Norway and Europe as well as potential changes with the election of President Donald Trump and the aggressiveness of Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, according to Bruce Gjovig, chairman of the UND’s Nordic Initiative and director of the UND Center for Innovation. Dorum is on campus this week to talk with students and leaders about educational exchanges in Norway.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Gophers men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino was named the Big Ten coach of the year by media and coaches on Monday, March 6. Pitino has led the Gophers to a 23-8 record this season, following last season’s 8-23 mark.
LUVERNE, Minn. -- A Taco John’s manager in southwestern Minnesota was charged with felony theft Monday after he and his wife, an assistant manager at the restaurant, allegedly took more than $31,000 from the store. Jacob and Amber Wright allegedly failed to make regular deposits, instead spending it and repaying the shortfalls later, and gambled at an Iowa casino to try to win back their debt. Store owners Ronald and John Christianson discovered the shortage and contacted police. During questioning, Jacob Wright admitted he had taken money from deposits for 18 months.
Gordmans Stores Inc., a Midwestern department-store chain founded more than a century ago, is preparing to file for bankruptcy, people familiar with the matter tell Bloomberg News.
ALBANY, Minn. – A rural Albany man and his three young sons escaped their burning home late Saturday night. All four suffered smoke inhalation. According to the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, the fire was reported shortly before midnight in Albany Township.
