Sept. 23, 1930-March 11, 2008 Lois C. Grindland, 77, of Willmar, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at her home. Lois Constance Johnshoy was born to Rev. Joseph and Helga (Larsen) Johnshoy on Sept. 23, 1930, in Moorhead, the youngest of nine children. She grew up in the Moorhead community, graduating from Moorhead High School in 1948. She then attended Concordia College in Moorhead, graduating in 1952 with a degree in music. As a student, she sang in the Concordia Choir and was the honored "Beautiful Savior" soloist. July 23, 1933-March 8, 2008 Former lakes area resident Howard S. Tingesdahl, 74, of Bakersfield, Calif., passed away Saturday, March 8, 2008, surrounded by his family and close friends. Howard Stanton Tingesdahl was born on July 23, 1933 in Moorhead, and spent his childhood in West Fargo, before moving with his family to southern California in 1959. After raising his family in Ontario, Howard and his wife returned to Minnesota during his retirement years, until two years ago, when they moved back to California to be close to family.
Sept. 14, 1914-March 1, 2008 Former Detroit Lakes resident Harriet V. Torgerson-Still, 93, of Las Vegas, Nev., passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008. Harriet Vivian Lundeen was born to Charlie and Marie Lundeen on Sept. 14, 1914, in St. Paul. She was a riveter in San Diego during World War II. She owned "The Bluebird" cafe in Montana, and also in Las Vegas. She also worked for Nevada Power Company, and retired after 20 years of service. Harriet was a fun-loving, elegant woman and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Oct. 13, 1980-Feb. 29, 2008 Christopher G. Kubat, 27, of Madison, Wis., passed away on Friday, February 29, 2008 from injuries sustained in a traffic accident. Christopher Gary Kubat was born the son of Gary and Nancy (Voss) Kubat on Oct. 13, 1980 in West Allis, Wis. He married Virginia O'Dell on June 29, 2002 in Madison.
Dec. 10, 1938-March 11, 2008 Former Detroit Lakes resident Jack D. Howe, 69, of Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., died at his home surrounded by family on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, following a brief but difficult fight with cancer. Jack was born to John A. "Bud" Howe and Mabel L. Howe on Dec. 10, 1938 in Detroit Lakes. After graduation from Detroit Lakes High School in 1957, Jack attended Northwest Telegraph School in Minneapolis. He then worked for the Minnesota State Highway Department until he entered the Army in 1961. He loved baseball and played on teams in the Detroit Lakes area.
Former Detroit Lakes resident John W. Youngquist, 88, of Green Valley, Ariz., died on Saturday, March 1, 2008 after a brief illness. John was born in Grasston, Minn., and served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He retired in 1985 as district engineer, after a 44-year career with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. John was an accomplished woodworker and gardener and enjoyed fishing and spending time with his children and their families.
May 8, 1938-March 9, 2008 Former Minneapolis resident Gerald E. "Bud" Engstrom, 69, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, March 9, 2008 at his residence. Gerald E. Engstrom, known as "Bud," was born to Edwin and Alma (Kyllo) Engstrom on May 8, 1938. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1960 and married Lois Ratz in Detroit Lakes that same summer. Following his service in the U.S. Army, he returned to Minneapolis, where he taught at the University of Minnesota and several Twin Cities area vocational-technical colleges.
Oct. 19, 1934-March 11, 2008 Gerald H. Meyer, 73, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, Minn. Gerald was born to George and Martha (Lemke) Meyer on Oct. 19, 1934 in Alexander, Iowa. When Gerald was young, his family moved to Barnesville, where he was raised and educated. He graduated from Barnesville High School. Gerald married Janet Mikkelsen on June 17, 1955. He worked as an artificial breeder in the cattle industry.
April 1, 1929-March 8, 2008 Waldo E. Kjos, 78, of Hitterdal, died Saturday, March 8, 2008 in Hitterdal. Waldo Eugene Kjos was born to Einar and Alpha (Krogen) Kjos on April 1, 1929 and lived with his family in Hawley. After his mother's death, he lived with an aunt in Hansboro, N.D., for several years before returning to Hawley. Waldo served his country in World War II, enlisting in the U.S. Navy when he was 17. While in the Navy, he served on three different ships. After his discharge, he returned to the Hawley community. Waldo married Darlene Erickson Schultz on Aug. 20, 1950 in Hawley.
Oct. 7, 1912-March 6, 2008 Roma K. Volden, 95, died on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at the Golden Living Center in Moorhead. Roma Gilbertson was born to Dinah Klaboe and Alfred Gilbertson on Oct. 7, 1912, on the Gilbertson family farm west of Audubon. In 1931, Roma and Ole Volden were married. They had two children, Ronald and Diane. Ole passed away in 1966. Roma worked at various places during her lifetime, including Swanson's Grocery and the Co-op Store, Audubon Hatchery, Audubon Public Schools, and was the assistant postmaster in Audubon until she retired.
