Dec. 16, 1922-Sept. 8, 2008 Former Fargo resident Marian E. Strand, 85, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, September 8, 2008 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo. Marion Elaine Cates was born to Eldred and Florence (Quance) Cates on Dec. 16, 1922 in St. Paul. As a young girl, she moved to Fargo, where she received her education, graduating from Fargo Central High School. Marian worked for the Weather Bureau at Hector Airport in Fargo during World War II. On Oct. 26, 1946 she married Duane R. Strand in Fargo. They made their home in Fargo until moving to the San Francisco Bay area in 1961.
June 7, 1923-Sept. 8, 2008 Della J. Peterson, 85, of Moorhead, passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, September 8, 2008. Della Jane Askegaard was born to Clark and Sena (Thompson) Askegaard on June 7, 1923 in Comstock, Minn., where she grew up and graduated from high school. She then went on to Moorhead State College, where she received her teacher's certificate, and went on to teach in rural Baker, Minn. On Oct. 20, 1943, Della married Lauren Peterson in Comstock. Together, they settled on the farm near Baker and raised eight children.
Feb. 24, 1927-Sept. 2, 2008 Former Dilworth resident Gerhardt Busche 81, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, September 2, 2008 in Detroit Lakes. Gerhardt was born to Louis and Amanda (Wagner) Busche on Feb. 24, 1927, on the family farm near Litchville. He grew up and attended school in that area. Gerhardt married Verna May Eggert in Detroit Lakes on July 19, 1948. They lived in Dumont, Minn., until 1955 when they moved to Fargo. Gerhardt worked for Armour and Company in West Fargo for 13 years.
Sept. 4, 1943-Sept. 1, 2008 Carole M. Olds, 64, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, September 1, 2008, at St. Mary's Innovis Health, Detroit Lakes. Carole M. Vogt was born to Joseph and Mable (Westgard) Vogt on Sept. 4, 1943 in Detroit Lakes, where she grew up and received her education. She received her G.E.D. later in her life, of which she was very proud. On July 11, 1964 she married Donald Olds in Detroit Lakes. They made their home in rural Detroit Lakes, where they raised their family. Carole liked to cook, bake, read, hunt and fish.
April 22, 1918-Aug. 31, 2008 Marie P. Neitzke, 90, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, August 31, 2008 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Marie was born to George and Caroline (Nelson) Paulson on April 22, 1918 in Minneapolis. She was a 1937 graduate of Blooming Prairie High School and also a graduate of the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. Following her education, she worked as a secretary for Federated Insurance Company in Owatonna, Minn.; Standard Oil Company in Mason City, Iowa, and Shell Oil in Seattle, Wash. Marie married C.P. "Pete" Neitzke on Aug.
Aug. 29, 1913-Sept. 1, 2008 Elsie S. Mickelson, 95, of Frazee, died Monday, September 1, 2008 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Elsie Severine Erickson was born to Eilef and Severine (Hanson) Erickson on Aug. 29, 1913 at the family farm in Spruce Grove Township, rural Frazee. She attended grade school in Spruce Grove Township and graduated from Menahga High School in 1931. Elsie married David Mickelson on Aug. 30, 1933 at Bethany Lutheran Church, where she was a lifelong member. Church and family were very important during her lifetime.
April 21, 1923-Aug. 26, 2008 Former Lake Park resident Harriet J. Martinson Mercer, 85, of Willmar, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Harriet Jane Faulk was born to Herbert and Hilda (Olson) Faulk on April 21, 1923, in Fridley, Minn. She grew up in Columbia Heights, Minn., where she attended school. She married Gordon Martinson in 1946. They lived in Lake Park, where they owned and operated a tavern. Gordon died in 1966, and Harriet continued to operate their business until 1990, when she retired and moved to Fargo. Harriet moved to Willmar in 2005.
Daniel Thomas Peil, 16, of Lake George has been charged with felony third-degree assault -- substantial bodily harm, in Becker County Juvenile Court. According to court records: He allegedly assaulted another young man at a gravel pit party in the Two Inlets State Forest in Becker County on June 7. Words were exchanged between the two and Peil allegedly hit him in the face and continued to strike him while he was on the ground, until he was restrained by others at the party.
Gustave W. Zaeske, 80, Audubon, died Monday, May 5, 2008, in St. Mary's Innovis Health, Detroit Lakes. Gust was born on Feb. 6, 1928, to Fred and Emma (Neinas) Zaeske in Leonard, N.D. He attended country school in rural Leonard, N.D., and helped on the family farm. Gust was united in marriage to Margene Schroeder on June 14, 1952, in Casselton, N.D. They made their home in rural Leonard, where Gust continued to work on the family farm. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1954, and received an honorable discharge in 1956.
Cynthia Marie Holzgrove, 52, formerly of Detroit Lakes, passed away March 31, 2008, in Kettering, Ohio. Cyndi was born in Bottineau, N.D., on April 14, 1955, to Kenneth and Ruth Anne (Connell) Holzgrove. She moved with her family to Detroit Lakes in 1962, where she completed her primary education. Cyndi traveled to Hawaii where she worked for a few years. She returned to Minnesota to attend college and earned her Associate of Arts and Dental Hygiene Degrees from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus in 1981.
