Aug. 22, 1935-Sept. 15, 2008 Evelyn R. Palm, 73, of Rochert, died Monday, September 15, 2008 at her residence. Evelyn R. Matejka was born to John and Mary (Honcik) Matejka on Aug. 22, 1935 in rural Hitterdal, where she grew up, graduating from Hitterdal High School. She moved to Detroit Lakes and went to work for First National Bank. On June 15, 1956 she married David C. Palm in Hawley. They made their home and raised their family in Rochert.
June 27, 1915-Sept. 15, 2008 Gladys M. Hermanson, 93, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, September 15, 2008 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes. Gladys M. Maring was born to Butolf and Tilda (Peterson) Maring on June 27, 1915 in Georgetown, Minn., where she grew up and attended school. She later attended Moorhead State Teachers College, where she received her teaching certificate. Her first teaching job came at the age of 17, at a country school near Georgetown. She then taught in Mahnomen, where she met Alton O.
Jan. 24, 1925-Sept. 12, 2008 Virginia Dixon, 83, of Fargo, died Friday, September 12, 2008, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Virginia, the daughter of Ernest and Esther (Malm) Jordahl, was born Jan. 24, 1925, in Detroit Lakes, and grew up in Lake Park, where she graduated as valedictorian of her high school class. Virginia graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1947, and was employed as a social worker in Yellow Medicine County, Minn., before she married Bob Slater of Aberdeen, S.D.
Jan. 3, 1942-Aug. 11, 2008 Detroit Lakes native Allan C. "Buck" Mortenson, 66, of Clear, Alaska, died Sunday, August 11, 2008 in Nenana, Alaska. Allan Curtis "Buck" Mortenson was born to Andrew and Ruth (Day) Mortenson on Jan. 3, 1942 in Detroit Lakes. He was raised in Ogema, along with nine brothers and sisters. He went to school in Waubun, and worked on farms and at grain elevators. In 1962, Buck married JoAnne Manning and together they had four children: Debbie, Tony, Lana, and Allan. Buck joined the U.S. Navy in 1960, and retired in 1980 as a Vietnam War veteran.
May 28, 1961-Sept. 11, 2008 Former Roseau resident Terry Lynn Roll, 47, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, September 11, 2008 at St. Mary's Innovis Hospital in Detroit Lakes. Terry Lynn Oslund was born to Layton and Marie (Benson) Oslund on May 28, 1961 in Roseau. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Riverside Lutheran in Wannaska, Minn. She graduated from Roseau High School in 1979 and attended school in Crookston. Terry married Wesley Roll on Sept. 20, 1980 at Riverside Lutheran in Wannaska.
Feb. 3, 1991-Sept. 5, 2008 Trent R. DeMaris, 17, of Montevideo, Minn., died on Friday, September 5, 2008 at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis due to an accidental shooting. Trent Robert DeMaris was born on Feb. 3, 1991 in Milbank, S.D. He was baptized at South Shore, S.D., and attended school in Wilmot, S.D. In 1997 he moved with his family to Montevideo, where he attended Montevideo Public Schools. He was confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church on Oct. 6, 2006 and received his GED a year earlier than expected.
March 7, 1919-Sept. 5, 2008 Detroit Lakes native Edna Kufus, 89, of St. Paul, died Friday, September 5, 2008 in St. Paul. Edna Pearson was born on March 7, 1919 in Detroit Lakes, and maintained a summer residence at Fern Beach, on Lake Melissa, until the time of her death. After graduating from college, Edna taught home economics in high school prior to starting a family, and thereafter excelled as a homemaker, wife and mother. She enjoyed travel and golf, and was an active member of the College Club-American Association of University Women.
May 15, 1917-Sept. 9, 2008 Lester M. Haugen, 91, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes. Lester M. Haugen was born to John and Carrie (Oien) Haugen on May 15, 1917 in Lake Eunice Township, where he grew up and attended District 78 country school. He worked on the family farm and also worked for neighboring farmers. He then served in the United States Army from 1942-46, stationed in England and Germany.
Sept. 13, 1949-Sept. 5, 2008 Detroit Lakes native Genevieve "Genny" F. Klinefelter, 58, of Monticello, Minn., peacefully passed away at her home, surrounded by her family. on Friday, September 5, 2008 after a courageous two-year battle with ovarian cancer. Genevieve Francis Stenger was born to Joe and Margaret (Carr) Stenger on Sept. 13, 1949 in Detroit Lakes. Genny graduated with honors from Frazee High School in 1967. After graduation, she moved to the Twin Cities, where she graduated from Lowthian College for Fashion Merchandising.
Nicholas Jack Kaluzniak, M.D., 78, of Pelican Rapids, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 7, 2008 at Meritcare Palliative Care Center in Fargo, after a courageous battle with cancer. Nicholas is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Joan Kaluzniak; daughters, Carla (Jonathon) Parrington of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Monica (Mark) LaBriola of Sacramento, Calif.; sons, Paul Kaluzniak of Forest Lake, Minn., David (Tracy) Kaluzniak of Plymouth, Minn., and Michael Kaluzniak of St.
