Feb. 8, 1918-Nov. 23, 2007 Ted Kiehl, 89, rural Detroit Lakes, died Friday, November 23, 2007 at St. Mary's Regional Health Center, Detroit Lakes. Ted was born to Gottlieb and Theophile (Wilde) Kiehl on Feb. 8, 1918 in Detroit Lakes. He grew up on the family farm in Becker County, and attended school in rural Detroit Lakes. As a young adult he was a mechanic and hired out for farm work. Ted married Alice Lundeen on June 5, 1939 in Sisseton, S.D. Ted and Alice made their home in rural Detroit Lakes, where they bought a farmstead to farm.
Dec. 18, 1936-Sept. 10, 2009 Willard P. "Bill" Kozlowski, 72, of Bemidji, died Thursday, September 10, 2009 at the North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji. Willard Paul "Bill" Kozlowski was born to Walter and Valeria (Jagielo) Kozlowski on Dec. 18, 1936 in Pray, Wis. He attended Neillsville High School, where he met his future wife, Betsy. Bill left home in 1954 at age 17 to join the United States Air Force. He furthered his education while enlisted, attaining an associate's degree. On Feb. 28, 1958, Bill married Betsy Norman.
R.M. "Mac" McManus, Jr., 85, of Bemidji died Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at Northridge Care Center (Masonic Home of Minnesota), in New Hope, Minn. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24 at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji, with Bemidji Masonic Lodge No. 233 officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Bemidji, with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 014 of Bemidji and the Patriotic Guard.
Sept. 20, 1922-Jan. 19, 2009 Truman Hermanson, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, January 19, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Truman Hermanson was born to Henry and Olga (Wermager) Hermanson on Sept. 20, 1922 in Fertile, Minn., where his father owned a livery stable. A short time later the family moved to Mahnomen, where his father owned a farm in Marsh Creek Township, and also worked at the Ford garage. Truman attended elementary and high school at Mahnomen, and graduated from there in 1940. `Truman joined the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Feb. 17, 1919-March 23, 2009 Bergit A. N. Laudon, 90, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, March 23, 2009 in Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes. Bergit was born to Ellef and Petra (Hamstad) Falstad on Feb. 17, 1919 on the family homestead in Skandia Township near Kathryn, N.D. She was the eighth of nine children. Bergit was baptized on the family farm and confirmed at Hastings (N.D.) Lutheran Church. She attended Brown School No. 2 for grades 1-8 and was a 1937 graduate of Hastings High School. After graduation, she worked in Fargo, where she met her future husband, James W.
Nov. 3, 1917-May 12, 2009 Mildred Iverson, 91, of Mahnomen, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home in Mahnomen. Mildred Theresa Gerda Urdahl was born to Knute and Amanda (Thompson) Urdahl on Nov. 3, 1917 in their home in Flaxville, Mont. As a very young girl, she moved with her parents to their family home near Flom, Minn. She attended Sunny Hill School and later Twin Valley High School. Mildred worked as a waitress until she met and married Gerald Iverson on Nov. 11, 1944. They were married at Wild Rice Lutheran Church near Flom.
Aug. 30, 1922-May 14, 2009 Former Ada and Moorhead resident Vernon A. Stevens, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, May 14, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Vernon Albert Stevens was born to Harry and Jessie (Davidson) Stevens on Aug. 30, 1922 in Ada, Minn. He was raised and educated near Ada. Vernon later lived near Hibbing, Minn., where he worked in building construction. He moved to Moorhead in the mid 1950's and worked in commercial building construction. He worked as a caretaker for Moorhead State University from 1977 to 1992.
June 21, 1921-May 13, 2009 Evelyn V. Kjono, 87, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Evelyn Viola Hovland was born to Arthur S. and Milla (Watterud) Hovland on June 12, 1921 at Rothsay, Minn. She was baptized and confirmed at South Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Rothsay. Evelyn married Calmer Kjono on Aug. 15, 1937 near Rothsay. They farmed at Rothsay for 13 years before moving to Pelican Rapids in 1950. Evelyn had worked at Simpson and Rybeck Bakery and a short time at the Recreation Center, then at Swan's Drug for 17 years.
May 26, 1958-May 2, 2009 Former Detroit Lakes resident Carneil L. Johnson, 50, of Hartville, Mo., died Saturday, May 2, 2009 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near her home. Carneil LaRaye Priem was born to Jerry and Arlyss (Arneson) Priem on May 26, 1958. She grew up in the Frazee, Vergas and Detroit Lakes area. She attended school in Frazee and Detroit Lakes. Carneil married Danny Johnson and they resided in rural Detroit Lakes, where they raised their three children: Corey, Dustin and Bobbi Jo.
June 25, 1937-May 12, 2009 Duyane J. Foltz, 71, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health, Detroit Lakes. Duyane was born the son of Joseph and Marie (Veik) Foltz on June 25, 1937, in Humphrey, Neb. At the age of 11, Duyane moved with his family to Frazee, where he continued his education, graduating in 1955. As a young man, Duyane enlisted in the United States Air Force on June 14, 1955. He served as a tail gunner on a B-36 during his time of service. Duyane married Faye Young on Dec. 9, 1958 in Puerto Rico, Mexico on the Ramey Air Force Base.
