BEMIDJI -- Tribal members nationwide started receiving Cobell settlement checks in the past few weeks from what has been dubbed one of the largest lawsuits ever against the federal government. Yet, thousands of people in Red Lake, Leech Lake and White Earth have not been paid -- because their whereabouts are unknown. The Office of the Special Trustee for American Indians keeps a list of people with Individual Indian Money accounts who do not have current addresses listed.
BEMIDJI -- Cops caught on camera became an even hotter topic across the nation in the wake of the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, Mo., last month. Part of the national conversation included the use of body cameras for police. Where do local law enforcement leaders stand on the topic? Bemidji Police Chief Mike Mastin and Beltrami County Sheriff Phil Hodapp welcome the concept.
The following cases were heard on Sept. 16, 2014 by Beltrami District Judge Shari R. Schluchter: Connie Lynn Geror, 51, of Bemidji was sentenced for financial transaction card fraud to 365 days in the Beltrami County Jail of which 344 days are stayed for two years. Geror must serve 21 days local confinement and has been credited with six days time served. Geror has been placed on two years court probation and must pay a $400 fine which may be done through community service or sentence to serve. BELTRAMI COUNTY -- A Cass Lake man was convicted Thursday by a jury in Beltrami County District Court on felony kidnapping and false imprisonment charges. Joseph Harvey Bellanger, 32, was found guilty on four counts of kidnapping and four counts of false imprisonment stemming from a meth-related incident in March.
BEMIDJI -- A man was stabbed in September in Bemidji after a woman allegedly ordered the act. Jonathan Garrick Beaulieu, 18, of Bemidji appeared Tuesday in Beltrami County District Court charged with felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. Beaulieu is accused of stabbing a man in Bemidji on Sept. 20. Bemidji Police Officers responded to a report of an assault at Skyline Village at approximately 12:08 a.m., court documents state. Upon arrival, officers observed a man on the back deck of a residence on Delton Ave. NW.
BEMIDJI -- On Sunday evening, a man offered to assist a motorist on the side of the road. Police say In return for his kindness, the man was threatened with a gun. Michael Alan Eugene Martin, 29, of Bemidji is charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. Martin is accused of aiming a pistol at the would-be Good Samaritan. A man called the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office to report he had just been assaulted on Jones Town Hall Road at 8:20 p.m. Sunday.
