BEMIDJI -- A Bemidji man who was arrested with a large amount of marijuana, firearms and methamphetamine in November was sentenced to 8 years in prison. Barry Lee Jacobson, 46, was convicted Aug. 11 in Beltrami County Court of one count of felony first-degree drug sale and one count of felony weapon possession. Jacobson entered a Lothenbach plea in July. By doing so, he waived a jury trial in exchange for a court trial in which a judge determines the sentence. Judge John Melbye sentenced Jacobson to eight years (98 months) in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St.
BEMIDJI -- A man from Richfield has plead guilty to charges in an attempted meth trafficking case. Alex "Sparky" Dejesus-Zuniga, 18, plead guilty to felony first-degree conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and giving a peace officer a false name on Aug. 11 in Beltrami County Court. Dejesus-Zuniga was arrested in May with two other individuals while transporting 43 grams of methamphetamine in a Jeep headed from the Twin Cities to the Red Lake Indian Reservation.
BEMIDJI -- A Bemidji man accused of burglarizing a home and defecating in a bathtub amended his not guilty plea to guilty on Aug. 8 in Beltrami County Court. Mark Edward Reitmeier, 26, was arrested by Bemidji police in February after a renter reported her house had been broken into. Reitmeier was located in an upstairs bathroom. Reitmeier was originally charged with one count of felony first-degree burglary and one count of felony second-degree burglary.

BEMIDJI -- Cases were transferred to federal court for two of four people from Bemidji arrested for methamphetamine trafficking in June. Raymond Jesse Nibbe Jr, 57, was charged with two counts of felony first-degree drug sale. Philip Eugene Gurzi, 55, was charged with three counts of felony first-degree drug sale. Beltrami County Court prosecution dismissed charges against Nibbe and Gurzi on Aug. 5.
BEMIDJI -- The woman charged with manslaughter in her 6-year-old cousin's death has been found incompetent to stand trial. Rachel Stacey Downer, 22, of Bemidji was charged with second-degree manslaughter in March after her cousin, Mercedes Mayfield, was discovered dead from hypothermia outside a south Bemidji apartment complex Feb. 27. Mayfield was in Downer's care the night before she died. Beltrami County Attorney Tim Faver said Downer's case has been suspended at this time. The court ruled Downer incompetent based on a court-appointed examiner's report.

BEMIDJI -- Mothers have been breastfeeding babies since the beginning of the human existence, yet in the modern day, women are often discouraged from feeding their children in public. Breastfeeding in Bemidji, a nursing support group, set out Saturday afternoon on a walk through town to support a woman's right to breastfeed. The crew of moms, dads, children and activists pushed strollers and carried a banner from Big River Scoop across from Paul and Babe through town and on to Diamond Point Park.
