BENA—While school is out for summer break, administrators at the Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig Schools in Bena are taking the opportunity to restructure staffing before student orientation in August. The school board approved the hiring of an academic principal and accepted the resignations of a middle school teacher and a Niigaane teacher at Thursday's school board meeting. Niigaane is the school's Ojibwe language immersion academy.
BAGLEY—Two Bagley women pleaded guilty Wednesday in Clearwater County District Court to felony-level drug charges stemming from a methamphetamine bust in April. Tambra Laws, 56, pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree possession of methamphetamine and Gabrielle Poitra, 42, pleaded guilty to one count of storing meth paraphernalia in the presence of a child or vulnerable adult. Both women face multiple charges. They are scheduled for sentencing Aug.
BEMIDJI—A Bemidji man was sentenced Tuesday in Beltrami County District Court to three years in prison for his part in an assault and robbery in January. Robin Lussier, 26, was convicted of felony third-degree assault and sentenced to 36 months in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud. He was credited with 173 days time served and ordered to pay a $50 fine. A second-degree aggravated robbery charge was dismissed. Lussier pleaded not guilty to the robbery charge Jan.
BEMIDJI—A Cass Lake man arrested in a Wilton burglary has been sentenced to three years in prison. Nathaniel Houle, 19, was convicted of felony first-degree aiding and abetting burglary and sentenced June 30 in Beltrami County District Court to 42 months in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud. Houle was credited with 175 days time served and ordered to pay a $50 fine. Houle was arrested with Brett King, 21, and Paige King, 18, both of Bemidji, in December after the three were identified as the people who were involved in an armed home invasion.

BEMIDJI—One dog has died and three others are still being treated for strychnine poisoning. The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office responded to a report Tuesday of several dogs being poisoned on the 1900 block of Grange Road Northwest, according to an incident report. The pet owner informed law enforcement she had returned home after a few hours to find her dogs acting sick. According to the report, a veterinarian told the woman the cause is believed to be from strychnine, a rodent poison not sold over the counter and not widely available.
BEMIDJI—A Michigan man and a Bemidji woman were taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after the Paul Bunyan Drug Task Force and Headwaters SWAT Team executed a high-risk search warrant in Bemidji. Demitrius Durant, 39, and Chessna Lalgie, 24, were arrested for first-degree possession with the intent to distribute nearly 20 grams of heroin, according to a release issued by the Bemidji Police Department. Durant and Lalgie were taken into custody at approximately 1 p.m. on the 500 block of Sixth Street Southeast.

Fire 4:17 p.m. A vehicle fire was reported on the 4800 block of Whitetail Road NE. Drugs 6:31 p.m. A juvenile was cited for possession of a small amount of marijuana in Beltrami County. 9:08 p.m.
BEMIDJI—A Minnetonka charged with criminal vehicular homicide after a fatal Fourth of July accident on Cass Lake appeared in Beltrami County District Court on Tuesday. Matthew Kinghorn, 46, was arrested Saturday after a boating accident on Cass Lake in which Brenda Larson, 50, Eden Prairie, was thrown from the boat and brought to shore unresponsive and not breathing. Kinghorn's wife, Jennifer, and his 4-year-old son were also on the boat. Kinghorn was driving the boat when he, Larson and Kinghorn's son fell out of the boat after hitting a wave.
