CASS LAKE—"Two spirited" people were once honored in Native American communities. Today, the term "two spirited" has been practically lost. Wednesday those who identify with both female and male genders will once again be celebrated during the first "Two Spirited LGBTQ Awareness Day" on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation. "The actual history of the two spirited individual is they were highly spiritual and revered," said event coordinator Arnold Dahl-Wooley. "We need to embrace all of our culture and all of our people.
BEMIDJI—A Bemidji woman arrested in connection with an armed home invasion in December was sentenced to four years in prison in Beltrami County District Court. Paige King, 18, was convicted of felony first-degree aiding and abetting burglary and sentenced June 1 to 58 months in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee. King was arrested along with Brett King, 21, of Bemidji and Nathaniel Houle, 19, of Cass Lake after the three entered a Wilton home while in possession of weapons. Paige King was credited with 153 days time served and ordered to pay a $50 fine.
BENA—Students returning to Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig Schools in the fall will be greeted by a new face. School administration announced at June's regular School Board meeting Thursday the K-12 principal vacancy has been filled. Interim Superintendent Pam Walker, who is also the school's special education coordinator, confirmed the hiring of Amanda Norman. Norman, a member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, is scheduled to begin July 6. The school is actively seeking a permanent superintendent.

Assault 1:44 p.m. A 52-year-old woman was arrested and issued a citation for allegedly assaulting a juvenile female on the 8000 block of Irvine Ave. NW. DWI 6:09 a.m. A 35-year-old man was arrested for driving while impaired on Power Dam Road NE and Swenson Road NE. 6:42 p.m.

WHITE EARTH—A Mahnomen woman charged with felony burglary and assault after she broke into a man's home and stabbed him in March was sentenced to six months in jail in Clearwater County District Court. Serena Oppegard, 41, was convicted of first-degree burglary and third-degree assault May 27. She was sentenced to six months in the Clearwater County Jail and credited with 75 days time served for the burglary charge. A 33-month prison sentence has been stayed for 20 years. A year-and-a-day prison sentence was stayed for five years on the assault charge.
