REDBY—Rain drops sprinkled down from an overcast sky as runners trickled in Wednesday morning for the 19th annual Annishinaabe Spiritual Run in Redby. A group of about 50 people launched a four-day relay trek across northern Minnesota to celebrate sobriety and wellbeing. Some of the runners would stop after the five-mile fun walk/run from Redby to Red Lake—others would go the 200-mile distance. CASS LAKE—A Cass Lake man pleaded guilty Thursday in Cass County District Court to felony drug possession after he was arrested in April with two women. John Wilke, 64, is charged with two counts of felony third-degree drug possession in a public housing zone, and two counts of fifth-degree drug possession. He pleaded guilty to one fifth-degree count Thursday. Wilke was arrested with Terri Frazer, 54, and Ida Beaulieu, 29, after a search warrant was served on April 21 at a Cass Lake residence.
WALKER—A Pine River man implicated in seasonal burglaries in the Lake Ada and Ponto Lake Township areas has been sentenced in Cass County District Court. Dean Benedict, 38, was arrested in February after a search warrant served at his residence revealed stolen property. Benedict's arrest happened after Richard Roubal, 28, also of Pine River, was found at a seasonal residence with a stolen ATV. Roubal's arrest led law enforcement to Benedict. Benedict was convicted July 20 of felony receiving stolen property and sentenced to 17 months in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St.
RED LAKE—Banning of alcohol at two of Red Lake's Seven Clans Casinos could be lifted pending the outcome of a mandatory referendum vote on Aug. 19. Red Lake Tribal Secretary Donald Cook Sr. announced Friday members of the Red Lake Nation will be voting on the sale of alcoholic beverages at the Thief River Falls and Warroad casino locations. "This shall not include any part of the diminished reservation," Cook said in a release.
