The following cases were heard on Sept. 2, 2014 by Beltrami District Judge Paul T. Benshoof: Kyle Walter Nelson, 29, of Bemidji was sentenced for second-degree DWI refusal to one year in the Beltrami County Jail of which 335 days are stayed for three years. Nelson must serve 30 days and has been credited with one day time served. Nelson has been placed on three years court probation and must pay a $400 fine. BEMIDJI -- Dog catchers and city pounds have been depicted in countless cartoons and television sitcoms over the years. Presumably the puppy jails are overrun with yippy dogs and hissing cats. Bemidji's City Pound is -- quiet and half-full most days. "It is a puppy jail, but it's a jail where they are treated very well," said Bemidji Police Officer Tom Charboneau. "It's so discouraging, some of the misconceptions out there." Charboneau is the department's designated community service officer and oversees the pound. On Thursday, two dogs and one cat were boarded at the city pound.

BLACKDUCK -- A PrimeWest insurance card led Beltrami County Sheriff's deputies to two men involved in a Blackduck burglary. Derick Jay Borntrager, 28, of Hines, and Billie Joe Large, 25, of Bemidji, were connected to a burglary on Beighley Road NW in Blackduck in which two ATVs, a flatbed trailer, Miller beer collectible signs and firearms were stolen. Large's wallet was found in one of the ATVs. On Aug. 25 a side-by-side ATV was reported abandoned on the Paul Bunyan Trail south of Lakeside Drive.
CASS LAKE -- The Cass Lake man involved in a crash that killed two people in May pleaded not guilty Monday in Cass County Court to felony criminal vehicular homicide. Michael James Stangel, 27, is charged with eight counts of criminal vehicular homicide.
BEMIDJI -- A Cass Lake man pleaded not guilty Monday in Beltrami County Court to felony criminal sexual conduct. Ira Ray Keezer, 37, is accused of molesting a 5-year-old girl in February while she was visiting family in Bemidji. Keezer is charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct which carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison and a $35,000 fine. According to court documents, Keezer denied touching the victim inappropriately. He is being held in the Beltrami County Jail. Keezer is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on Tuesday.
