BEMIDJI -- Oak Hills Christian College has been selected as a finalist in the Stanley Security Together for Safer Schools grant program. At stake is $100,000 in Stanley Security-installed products and services to help secure students and facilities within the campus. The contest requires schools to rally for votes online via the designated Stanley Security voting site, through text message and Twitter. Supporters can vote all three ways daily through Feb.
BEMIDJI -- Ten local high-schoolers just this week began working toward becoming certified nursing assistants. That newly resurrected program came on the heels of a celebration that recognized eight other high-school students who earned a total of 15 certificates in mechatronics. ST. CLOUD -- A robotics team from Heartland Christian Academy in Bemidji finished in the top 10 teams that competed at a state-level robotics tournament held over the weekend in St. Cloud. The "Heartland Christian" team made it as far as the semifinals in the championship round of the Dream It. Do It. Minnesota State VEX Robotics Tournament. That team was among 24 that qualified for the championship rounds of the tournament, held at the River's Edge Convention Center. Two teams from Bemidji Middle School also competed in the state tournament.

BEMIDJI -- On Tuesday mornings, the voice of John Gonzalez sounds throughout the halls and classrooms at Horace May Elementary as he introduces the Ojibwe language and culture to the students and staff at the school. "Today's date in Ojibwe is Tuesday, Niizho-giizhigad noongom; January, Gichi-Manidoo-Giiziz; 20th, Niishtanagonagizi," he said, speaking into a microphone. Gonzalez, an associate professor of psychology at BSU, comes into the school once a week to assist with the morning announcements, acting as a guest DJ.
BEMIDJI -- Courtney "Guns" Gunsalus will host a viewing party Wednesday as "American Idol" airs a recap of its Minneapolis auditions held this past summer. Gunsalus, who performs as Courtney Guns, was among those who auditioned for the reality singing competition and has been included in promotional materials for the 14th season of "American Idol." According to her Facebook page, Gunsalus will arrive at Schummer's Backwoods Bar & Grill by 6 p.m. ahead of the 7 p.m. air time. Backwoods Bar is located at 48220 Reserve Trail, south of Bemidji.
