Duane Columbus, a Bois Forte tribe member, nearly died when he was injured by a rocket-propelled grenade in 1969 in Vietnam. For 30 years he tried unsuccessfully to get benefits. But then he met Alan Ellenson. Ellenson, who then worked with Beltrami County, offered to help Columbus work toward getting benefits and assisted him in filling out paperwork. "I was hesitant," Columbus said, explaining that offers of help in the past hadn't produced any results. But this time it was different.
The Bemidji City Council on Monday will consider the creation of a new city task force. Councilor Onen Markeson and City Manager John Chattin have been working together toward establishing a means to ensure the sustainability of the community's natural resources, according to an agenda report regarding the task force. The goal is to "formulate recommendations for the preservation and protection of the area's ecosystems and natural resources so that our use of natural resources is in balance for nature's ability to replenish them," according to the agenda report. Buck Theodore Eide, 19, of Bemidji, pleaded innocent Sept. 24 to criminal vehicular operation of a motor vehicle resulting in great bodily harm, a serious felony. He requested a jury trial. Eide is accused of causing the July 7, 2006, motor vehicle accident in which Peggy Hook, 52, of Bemidji, was seriously injured.
Derek Gustafson, 13, of Puposky, was listed in critical condition Thursday at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo. Derek was injured Tuesday evening when the all-terrain vehicle he was driving reportedly rolled on top of him when he swerved to avoid an animal. He was found Tuesday evening on the 10900 block of Harvest Road Northeast with his ATV turned over and its right floorboard lying across his abdomen, according to the police report. The AVT was pulled off Derek using a winch on another ATV, the report stated.
Derek Gustafson, 13, of Puposky, was injured when the all-terrain vehicle he was driving rolled over on top of him Tuesday evening. The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at 6:49 p.m. Tuesday on the 10900 block of Harvest Road Northeast and found Blackduck Ambulance personnel with an injured boy, who was identified as Derek Gustafson, according to the police report. Deputies were told that Derek had been injured about two hours before the call, but had been pinned underneath the ATV, the report said. Two ATVs were at the scene when deputies arrived.
Timothy Lee White, 18, of Bemidji, was charged Tuesday with felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. White is accused of stabbing Michael Hesch, 19, of Bemidji, on Saturday during a fight on the 3000 block of Archery Road Northwest. According to the criminal complaint, the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a stabbing at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday on Archery Road Northwest.
The Bemidji City Council on Monday voted 5-1 to contribute an additional $36,000 toward the expansion of a water basin in the Tyler Estates development.
New signs at Diamond Point Park will explain the history of the region and the park. The Bemidji City Council on Monday approved the purchase and installation of 19 interpretive signs to be placed throughout the park. Seven signs will be situated at the main park building, six along the walkway, and three at the Outdoor Program Center. Fossil Graphics will make the signs at a cost of $13,681 and Gordon Construction will provide hardware and labor at a lost of $1,654.

The final leg of Debra Davis' journey into public life happened in the spring of 1998. As a high school librarian, she left work one Friday as a man and returned the following week as herself, a woman. "The man (was) never to be seen again - if he ever existed," Davis said. Davis, a librarian at Southwest High School in Minneapolis, is transgender male to female, which means she was born a male but identifies herself as female.
