Among notable action taken at the Bemidji City Council meeting Tuesday: Library budget Kitchigami Regional Library Director Marian Ridge presented the 2008 Bemidji Public Library budget, which includes a 3 percent increase for the city of Bemidji ($101,284) from 2007. Bemidji's automation repair and replacement commitment for 2008 is an additional $7,715. ACTION: No action necessary. Bemidji Avenue project The City Council considered adoption of a resolution approving the feasibility report concerning the reconstruction of Bemidji Avenue and setting a public hearing for 7 p.m.
The Bemidji City Council has a little more than two months to answer some looming questions. The council has to soon finalize its request for legislative bonding that would assist in costs associated with construction of the proposed events center. Councilor Onen Markeson may continue his efforts in establishing the Bemidji Sustainability Task Force. The Bemidji City Council on Monday unanimously approved the request without dedicating funding to the task force. Markeson learned of a similar effort in the city of Duluth during the League of Minnesota conference held earlier this summer. The goal of the Bemidji task force is to "formulate recommendations for the preservation and protection of the area's ecosystems and natural resources so that our use of natural resources is in balance for nature's ability to replenish them," according
The boil order for the city of Park Rapids has been lifted. The city received a boil order - in which residents were required to boil their tap water before use - on Saturday morning from the Minnesota Department of Health after fecal coliform, or E. coli bacteria, was found in the city's water supply, according to a press release from the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office.
Duane Columbus, a Bois Forte tribe member, nearly died when he was injured by a rocket-propelled grenade in 1969 in Vietnam. For 30 years he tried unsuccessfully to get benefits. But then he met Alan Ellenson. Ellenson, who then worked with Beltrami County, offered to help Columbus work toward getting benefits and assisted him in filling out paperwork. "I was hesitant," Columbus said, explaining that offers of help in the past hadn't produced any results. But this time it was different.
The Bemidji City Council on Monday will consider the creation of a new city task force. Derek Gustafson, 13, of Puposky, was listed in critical condition Thursday at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo. Derek was injured Tuesday evening when the all-terrain vehicle he was driving reportedly rolled on top of him when he swerved to avoid an animal. He was found Tuesday evening on the 10900 block of Harvest Road Northeast with his ATV turned over and its right floorboard lying across his abdomen, according to the police report. The AVT was pulled off Derek using a winch on another ATV, the report stated.
Buck Theodore Eide, 19, of Bemidji, pleaded innocent Sept. 24 to criminal vehicular operation of a motor vehicle resulting in great bodily harm, a serious felony. He requested a jury trial. Eide is accused of causing the July 7, 2006, motor vehicle accident in which Peggy Hook, 52, of Bemidji, was seriously injured.
Derek Gustafson, 13, of Puposky, was injured when the all-terrain vehicle he was driving rolled over on top of him Tuesday evening. The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at 6:49 p.m. Tuesday on the 10900 block of Harvest Road Northeast and found Blackduck Ambulance personnel with an injured boy, who was identified as Derek Gustafson, according to the police report. Deputies were told that Derek had been injured about two hours before the call, but had been pinned underneath the ATV, the report said. Two ATVs were at the scene when deputies arrived.
New signs at Diamond Point Park will explain the history of the region and the park. The Bemidji City Council on Monday approved the purchase and installation of 19 interpretive signs to be placed throughout the park. Seven signs will be situated at the main park building, six along the walkway, and three at the Outdoor Program Center. Fossil Graphics will make the signs at a cost of $13,681 and Gordon Construction will provide hardware and labor at a lost of $1,654.
