TAYLORS FALLS, Minn. (AP) — The ski season is open at Wild Mountain in Chisago County, a sharp contrast to the water slides that were operating two weeks ago. Ski hill operators say Oct. 7 is the earliest start on record. A chilly start to October created the right conditions for the hill in Taylors Falls to begin making snow. Amy Frischmon tells KMSP-TV as soon as it dips below freezing they have a crew ready to turn on the snow-making guns.
UnitedHealth Group Inc. will spend about $4.9 billion to buy a majority stake in a Brazilian health benefits and care provider, as the largest U.S. health insurer leaps into an international market it says is primed for growth. The Brazilian company provides health and dental benefits and runs a care delivery network that includes 22 hospitals, about 50 clinics. It serves more than 5 million people.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter who missed a nationally-televised match because of his arrest in Minneapolis remains in jail. Twenty-six-year-old Jeremy Dean Stephens was arrested Friday at a downtown hotel on a felony assault warrant from Iowa. He was still in the Hennepin County Jail Monday. UFC president Dana White tried to cut a deal to get Stephens out on bail in time for the match, but it fell through. White has accused authorities of purposely waiting just hours before the match to arrest Stephens, a mixed martial arts fighter.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — You might be surprised to learn it's not a rural county that leads the state in the most collisions between deer and vehicles in Minnesota. State safety officials say Hennepin County may have a smaller deer population than more rural counties in Minnesota, but it has many more people behind the wheel. The county had 508 collisions with deer from 2009 to 2011. Another top county for collisions is one that's closer to the lakes area, Sherburne County, with 484 crashes during the same time frame.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — One of the five people killed by a gunman at a Minneapolis sign company is being laid to rest. A funeral service for 50-year-old Keith Basinski, a father of three, is to be held Thursday afternoon at Emmanuel Christian Center in Spring Lake Park. Gov. Mark Dayton plans to attend the service. Basinski was making his regular UPS stop at Accent Signage Systems Sept. 27 when he and four others were gunned down by Andrew Engeldinger, an employee who had just been fired and who killed himself.
