MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota has sent two emergency management teams to Massachusetts to help in the response to Hurricane Sandy . Massachusetts requested the teams, totaling five people, through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact , a mutual aid agreement between states.
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (AP) — Rice County sheriff's officials say they've arrested a gunman who robbed a Northfield hotel and fired at officers. Deputy sheriff Dave Stensrud says a police dog helped track down the suspect in Northfield. Authorities say the suspect was wearing a black ski mask and carrying a handgun when he robbed the America's Best Value Inn about 3 a.m. Monday.
SILVER BAY, Minn. (AP) — Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. has agreed to pay over $300,000 to settle a pollution violation at its Northshore Mining plant in Silver Bay. Cliffs says the violation happened last year when the taconite plant transported alkaline runoff from its coal ash landfill to the wastewater treatment plant in Duluth. The pH of the runoff was above permissible levels, but Cliffs says it was processed without any damage to the treatment plant or harm to the environment.
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota State Patrol says a driver who ran out of gas triggered a seven-vehicle interstate pileup which killed a cab driver. The patrol says a tanker truck and six other vehicles crashed Monday during the morning commute on Interstate 494 in the Twin Cities metro. Authorities say a minivan that ran out of gas came to a stop in the right lane of the interstate. That caused three other vehicles in the right lane to crash. A taxicab swerved into the middle lane, sideswiped a vehicle and then was struck by the truck.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minneapolis police say two victims have been found dead in a residence after officers responded to a report of a stabbing. Police were called to the home about 4:30 a.m. Monday. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The victim struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in Minneapolis has been identified as a young college student. Family members and friends at Augsburg College are mourning the loss of 20-year-old Austin Conley. He was a freshman who lived on campus and was majoring in business management. Austin was hit about 3 a.m. Saturday in downtown Minneapolis by a driver who has not yet been found.
NEW YORK (AP) — Hurricane Sandy grounded thousands of flights in the U.S. northeast Monday and upended travel plans across the globe, stranding passengers from Hong Kong to Europe. The massive storm threatens to bring a near halt to air travel for at least two days in a key region for both domestic and international flights.
BEMIDJI – The Bemidji Area Community Interagency Committee (CTIC) will host the 7th annual Transition Expo from 6 to 8 p.m., Oct. 30 in the Bemidji High School Commons Area. The expo will provide high school students and their families an opportunity to meet with various agencies that can assist them with life planning after high school. Area colleges and technical schools, as well as assistance agencies, will be on-hand to discuss available post-graduation options.
ST. PAUL – Minnesota State Patrol troopers, county deputies and municipal officers will increase their DWI enforcement presence this weekend and next weekend as part of an effort to decrease drunk-driving-related deaths during the Halloween week.
BRAINERD, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota House Republican Campaign Committee says a field staff employee who misrepresented himself in a letter to the editor of the Brainerd Dispatch is no longer working for the organization. In his published letter, Stephen Sundquist inferred he intended to vote for DFL candidate Joe Radinovich but was dismayed by the Democrat's public statements and intended to write-in the name of former Aitkin County DFL Chair David Strand.
