BEMIDJI -- Regardless of the length of practice -- or if it is before practice or after -- it is almost a guarantee that Bemidji Axemen quarterback Cody Kirby will be working on routes and timing with his receiving corps. Kirby, who joined the team midseason, has won over his new teammates and coaches with an undeniable work ethic. "I have always prided myself on my work ethic," Kirby said.
BEMIDJI -- Bemidji Axemen kicker Josiah Powell had his 33-yard field goal blocked with 16 seconds remaining and the Tri-Cities Fever escaped with a 51-50 win in Indoor Football League action Saturday at the Sanford Center. The decision to kick the field goal came after three timeouts -- two by the Axemen (5-5) and one by the Fever (4-6).
BEMIDJI -- For Bemidji Axemen head coach Robert Fuller, going back to Green Bay was personal, as he was fired by the Blizzard last season, despite taking the team to a conference title game and earning IFL coach of the year honors. The team delivered with a thrilling, 66-61 win in the final seconds to give Fuller a 3-0 record against his former team. "I would be lying if I said it was not a big deal on a personal level," Fuller said of returning to Green Bay. "But we never really discussed it as a team.
BEMIDJI -- The BSU baseball team wrapped up its 2014 season with a split against Minot State Sunday. BSU dropped game one 3-2 in eight innings before winning 3-0 in the second game to finish the season 21-22 overall and an even 15-15 in NSIC play. Both BSU and Minot State entered Sunday with hope of making the postseason, but the split, combined with a SMSU sweep over Northern State led to BSU finishing ninth and Minot State finishing eighth in a conference that sends eight teams to the postseason. BSU struck first in the opening game when Tyler Nelson drew a bases-loaded walk to score Cole
BEMIDJI -- Former BSU forward Matt Read, now a member of the Philadelphia Flyers, was announced Sunday as one of the 23 players on Canada's roster for the 2014 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Championship. The IIHF begins Friday, May 9 in Minsk, Belarus, and will run through May 25. The selection, announced by Hockey Canada Executive Director Rob Blake, is the second consecutive for the former Beaver. Read picked up a goal and two assists in eight games for Canada in the 2013 IIHF, where Canada was knocked off by Sweden in the quarterfinal round. Read is one of 18 players on Ca
BEMIDJI -- Even though the Indoor Football League is dominated by offensive numbers and statistics, it does not take long for a spectator to notice Bemidji Axemen linebacker Jory Johnson and his contribution on the other side of the ball. In eight games with the Axemen, Johnson leads the team with 32.5 tackles and 7.5 tackles for a loss, and his 4.5 sacks and two interceptions -- one returned for a 30-yard touchdown -- also rank near the top of Bemidji's defensive charts. "Jory has really established himself as one of the leaders of our defense," said Axemen coach Robert Fuller said.

MORTON -- The BSU women's golf team finished in ninth place in the NSIC Championship that concluded Sunday in Morton. The Beavers entered Saturday's action in ninth place and climbed into eighth after shooting a 357 (+69) Saturday in the third round, but lost ground with a 369 (+81) Sunday. The first two rounds of the tournament were played back in October in Brainerd. Augustana's team score of 1304 was 33 strokes better than any other school and its pair of 324's last weekend proved to be the best rounds of the entire tournament. BSU shot 1455 as a team and finished 25 strokes behind Siou
