Smoke billows above a stand of pine trees Wednesday in Beltrami Island State Forest in this photo from Penny Turgeon-Kimble of Warroad, Minn. The "Palsburg Fire," as it's called, had burned more than 6,000 acres of timber by Thursday morning, and firefighters continued to try and contain the blaze.

A crew from Klamath Falls, Ore., heads into the wilderness near Island Lake, Minn., to fight the the Pagami Creek fire on Sept. 15, 2011.  A forest fire that smoldered for nearly a month on the Minnesota-Canada border before exploding this week to cover nearly 160 square miles is laying bare old disagreements over the best way to manage wildfire.
