The Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department said that concrete pouring at Paul Bunyan Park could be completed by Thursday. The area in front of the iconic statues of Paul and Babe sparked controversy this summer when original plans for renovations called for an earthen mound in front of the famous lumberjack and his trusted ox. A controversy over the new Paul Bunyan Park design, specifically in front of the Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox statues, had several local residents concerned if there is enough room to clearly photograph the famous statues. A panoramic view of the Paul Bunyan Park construction, which officials say is on schedule. The renovations are intended to make the park more aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly, including a new parking lot design and landscaping changes. The park also will be home to the future All-Inclusive Playground. Several annual summer events are moving because of the construction, but work will be halted for the annual Dragon Boat Festival July 29-Aug. 1. (Monte Draper)
