WRESTLING: BHS finishes 2-2 at Monticello duals
MONTICELLO -- The Bemidji High School wrestling team faced some tough competition on Saturday at the Monticello duals tournament, resulting in a 2-2 record on the day and a fifth-place finish.
The Lumberjacks opened the day with a 38-19 loss to St. Michael-Albertville, followed it with a win over Wayzata (57-18) and and a loss to Willmar (40-16), and finished on a high note with a 46-20 victory over Annandale/Maple Lake.
BHS winners against STMA included Jon Solum (11-3 major decision) at 138 pounds, Chance Hinrichs (12-6 decision) at 160, Hunter Schoenborn (fall, 1:28) at 220 and Kaleb Beam (fall, 3:26) at 285, but the Knights were too much and claimed the win.
Things turned around in a hurry for Bemidji in the second match, though. Bemidji had eight pins, a decision win and a forfeited win on the way to their victory over Wayzata -- but the decision win was the highlight of the match as Solum topped Class 3A No. 5 Mitchell Hogue by a 9-5 decision.
Also with a bout to remember was Chance Hinrichs, who picked up his 100th career win when Wayzata forfeited the 170 match.
Against Willmar, the Cardinals jumped ahead with wins in the first five bouts, and BHS couldn’t work its way back into the match. Nate Golden, as well as Colton and Chance Hinrichs, each won decisions in the middle weights, but ultimately Willmar ran away with the 40-16 win.
In the day’s finale, Newby, Hudson, Wuori, Colton Hinrichs, Schoenborn and Beam each pinned their Annandale/Maple Lake opponents, while Bryce Golden won a major decision and Solum and Nic Geiger won decisions for the win.
The Lumberjacks are back on the mat at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, when they host Hibbing and Pequot Lakes for a home triangular at Bemidji High School.
