BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji High School girls tennis team won all three of its matches in a home quadrangular on Tuesday at Bemidji High School, beating Detroit Lakes 4-3, Staples-Motley 7-0 and East Grand Forks 5-2.
The Lumberjacks (7-5) opened the day against a tough section opponent in Detroit Lakes. Taylor Offerdahl and Savannah Haugen were the first two to finish, with Offerdahl defeating Shelby Busker 6-4, 6-0 at second doubles and Haugen topping Brina Smith 6-3, 6-3.
Lexi Leitner and Hannah Nelson then stretched the Bemidji lead to 4-0 with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Emily Skjonsberg and Mary Nelmark.
“The girls knew this was an important match for us and we talked about how it would come down to who would ‘refuse to lose’ important points,” BHS head coach Mark Fodness said. “First doubles really came through with that mentality today as they fell behind 1–5 in the first set and then came roaring back to win 7-5.”
The Lakers then claimed the third and fourth singles matches over Aftyn Schmidt and Tatum Offerdahl, both in third-set tiebreakers, but the Jacks clinched the win at No. 2 doubles where Bethany Chatterton and Nettie Kimble topped Chloe Will and Makenna Duncan 7-4, 5-7, 10-6.
“We lost at third singles and fourth singles and both second doubles and third doubles were playing their third set tiebreakers at the same time on courts next to each other,” Fodness said. “Needless to say, both teams were under a lot of pressure at that point.”
Bemidji needed the Chatterton/Kimble win, as Chloe Hasbargen and Paige Anderson lost the No. 3 doubles match seconds later to Lauryn Manning and Mercedez Bellanger 2-6, 6-2, 3-10.
The Jacks’ second match of the day wasn’t nearly as stressful, as they swept Staples-Motley 7-0 with six of the wins coming in two sets
Haugen, Taylor Offerdahl, Tatum Offerdahl and Kylen Fenson earned singles wins, in order, in two sets, while Leitner and Nelson won in three (6-2, 1-6, 11-9) at first doubles.
Kimble teamed up with Chatterton at second doubles for a 6-4, 6-0 win, while Eva Laituri and Paige Headlee locked down third doubles 6-1, 6-4.
“We really have not had any dominant wins this year so it was nice to see the girls step up and put their opponents away in our second match,” Fodness said. “The wind conditions made play difficult and the heat was starting to wear players down, so a lot of our success was due to playing with mental toughness. I thought that was a step forward for our team. The points we won on many of the courts were not always pretty, but we found a way to get the job done.”
Against the Green Wave in the day’s finale, Haugen and the Offerdahl sisters helped the Jacks to three out of four singles wins, and the pairings of Kimble-Chatterton and Hasbargen-Fenson won No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively, for the 5-2 win.
The Lumberjacks are off the courts until 9 a.m., Sept. 15, for an invitational at Hibbing’s Lincoln Elementary School.
