TENNIS: BSU sweeps UW-River Falls
ST. CLOUD -- In its first fall match since the 2010 season, the Bemidji State tennis team swept Wisconsin-River Falls, 9-0, Saturday to open the 2018-19 season at St. Cloud Tech High School.
The Beavers won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead over the Falcons. Zoë Lindgren and Hannah Alme combined for a 8-0 victory in the No. 1 match, Hannah Peterson and Laney Rutkowski won their match, 8-3, in the No. 3 slot, before Brooke Mimmack and Breann Walsh earned an 8-4 win to complete the doubles sweep in the No. 2 match.
In her collegiate debut, Rutkowski led the Beavers out of the gate with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 6 singles spot. From there, BSU rattled off three consecutive straight-set wins to clinch the victory. Alme posted a 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 2 match, Lindgren won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-4, and Peterson collected a 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 5 match. Walsh needed a tie-breaker, but prevailed 7-1, 7-6 (7-1) in the No. 4 match and Mimmack recorded a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles.
The sweep marks the 10th for BSU in the 33 matches since the start of the 2017 season and the Beavers' fifth straight victory over the Falcons.
