Wizard of Woz: Dane wins in stunning Aussie comeback
Just ask second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki after she pulled off a stunning comeback against 119th-ranked Jana Fett in the second round of the Australian Open on Wednesday in Melbourne.
Fett, a 21-year-old Croatian, led 5-1 in the third set against Wozniacki, a 27-year-old Dane, and was serving with two match points. Wozniacki won those points and the next two to break serve, then easily won the next five consecutive games to pull out a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory.
"I'm just relieved to be through. I fought for every point, and I was rewarded today," Wozniacki said. "I think it was my experience today that made the difference. I'm just glad to have another chance to be out here in Melbourne."
In the end, Fett was doomed by poor serving -- putting just 43 percent of her first serves in play -- and a failure to convert her opportunities -- going just 2-for-8 on break-point chances.
Wozniacki's next opponent will be the Netherlands' Kiki Bertens, who beat American Nicole Gibbs 7-6 (3), 6-0.
Another high seed got pushed to three sets in her second-round match, as No. 4 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine defeated the Czech Republic's Katerina Siniakova 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
French Open champion and No. 7 seed Jelena Ostapenko moved into the third round after beating Ying-Ying Duan of China 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko upset Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the 15th seed, 6-2, 6-3 in 76 minutes.
Nineteenth-seeded Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia eliminated Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens 6-4, 0-6, 6-2, while 22nd-ranked Russian Darya Kasatkina fell 7-6 (4), 6-2 to Poland's Magda Linette.
Belinda Bencic, the 20-year-old Swiss, is out of the Grand Slam event only two days after her upset win over Venus Williams in the first round, losing 6-1, 6-3 to Thai qualifier Luksika Kumkhum.
Alize Cornet of France beat No. 12-seeded Julia Goerges of Germany 6-4, 6-3.
Other second-round winners Wednesday included Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, the Czech Republic's Denisa Allertova, Croatia's Petra Martic and Thailand's Luksika Kumkhum.
