Bemidji athletes head to National Special Olympics
Parker Bruns and Shawn Kiefer of Bemidji were selected to attend the National Special Olympics Games for Swimming in Seattle, Wash., July 1-6. Bruns and Kiefer both earned gold medals at the state special Olympics swimming competition last March to be given the opportunity to try out for Team Minnesota swimming. Bruns and Kiefer will join two other male and four female athletes from Minnesota. The pair are members of the Bemidji Special Olympics Swim Team.
The area competition for the year will be held March 23 at Bemidji High School. The Minnesota State competition will be June 22-23 at the University of St. Thomas. A week later, Bruns and Kiefer will fly to Washington with the other members of Team Minnesota to compete.
Bemidji provides sporting opportunities for several athletes throughout the year, including powerlifting, bowling, swimming, softball, bocce ball, track and field and basketball, a release said.
