PREP SOFTBALL: Jacks shut out Roughriders for 4-0 win
GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Unsung heroes on the Bemidji High School softball team stepped up in a big way Friday, helping the Lumberjacks top Grand Forks Red River 4-0 in Grand Forks, N.D.
“We had quite a few of our starters missing, but some kids got a chance to play, and they competed, they made plays,” BHS head coach Brad Takkunen said. “It was a good game. It was fun.”
Notably, Savannah Bakke and Kenzie Christiansen picked up RBIs in the sixth for Bemidji (10-5) to add separation to a 1-0 lead. And defensively, second baseman Maggie Marcotte flashed the leather to help preserve Gabbi Takkunen’s shutout.
“Defensively, I thought Maggie Marcotte played a very solid game, very good game,” coach Takkunen said. “...She made a nice grab behind first base, kind of a running catch. And then a girl laced a one-hopper, and she flagged it down, made a nice play.”
From the circle, Gabbi Takkunen tossed a complete game, allowing just three hits while striking out six and shutting out the Roughriders (9-3) on the scoreboard.
“Gabbi pitched very well,” coach Takkunen said. “She was hitting her spots, kept them off-balance. There were only one or two balls that were hit pretty hard. Everything else was pop-ups or ground balls or strikeouts.”
Keena Kondos singled and later scored in the seventh for one more insurance run, leading to the 4-0 win and Bemidji’s seventh in its last eight games.
The Jacks will return to the diamond at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, to host Duluth East at the BHS softball field in their last home game of the regular season.
