CROOKSTON -- The Bemidji High School girls soccer team had five sophomores on the scoresheet during the team’s game in Crookston on Tuesday, including a three-goal, two-assist effort from Peyton Oelrich in her first varsity game to lead the Lumberjacks to an 11-0 win over the Pirates.
Sophia Morin and Emma Neubeck, also sophomores, scored their first varsity goals, as well. Morin finished with one goal and two assists while Neubeck had two goals.
“We have an extremely strong junior varsity team,” BHS head coach Logan Larsen said. “Plenty of girls that could play at the varsity level, so we just wanted to make sure they knew that. We’re happy with so many of our players, so yeah, it was just nice to get them in there.”
The Lumberjacks (7-0) had a slow first half with just two goals on the board, but they took off in the final 40 minutes for nine more.
“It was just smart play,” Larsen said. “The attacks were smart, the timing on the passes, just recognizing how to open up the opponent’s back line. It’s not like we went in there and went crazy trying to make it a brutal game.”
Abigail Kieson earned her second straight shutout in goal for Bemidji after the team’s 4-0 defeat of Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Saturday, Sept. 8.
“I think the defenders did a good job of pushing up and just making sure we could control it in their end,” said Larsen. “Just making the right habits, so when we go along in the season, our game stays consistent.”
Also scoring for the Lumberjacks were Aliya Berard (twice), Rebecca Ritter and Liberty Dickerson, who had a goal and an assist.
Sophomore Hailey Nelson also claimed a pair of assists on the day.
The Jacks look to stay unbeaten through their game against Little Falls at noon Saturday at Bemidji Middle School.
