GIRLS SOCCER: Hildenbrand leads Lumberjacks in whirlwind win
EAST GRAND FORKS -- In a Section 8A title game rematch that had three lead changes, the Bemidji High School claimed the last laugh against East Grand Forks on Tuesday, as Lindsey Hildenbrand’s two goals and one assist led the Lumberjacks to a 4-3 win in EGF.
After surrendering the opening goal in the fourth minute – a Chloe Torgerson header off a Riley Regorrah set piece – it seemed like the Jacks (4-0) would head into halftime with a 1-0 deficit.
But in the 34th minute, Hildenbrand took the ball on a long run before depositing it in the net off the post to even the score at 1-all. Sophomore Liberty Dickerson earned her first career varsity assist on the play.
Then, three minutes later, Aliya Berard took a cross from Emma Dean, was stopped on her first attempt on goal and then buried it for a 2-1 Lumberjack lead.
It took 12 minutes of second half action for either team to score again, but once the Green Wave (0-1) scored the first, the floodgates were open and three more goals were scored within nine minutes.
The first goal was Kora Jordheim’s in the 62nd minute, assisted by Brynn Hillman. EGF then took the lead just two minutes later when Regorrah sniped out a goal on another free kick opportunity for a 3-2 Wave lead.
After that, it was Bemidji’s turn again, and Hildenbrand threaded a pass through a defender’s legs to Dean, who corralled it, turned and fired to equalize, 3-3.
Hildenbrand finished the game off five minutes later in the 71st, starting with a pass from Harper Toward to Kinley Prestegard on a counter play. Prestegard found Hildenbrand on the rush, and she fired in her second goal of the game, the one that would prove to be the game winner.
The Jacks take their undefeated record into their next contest, which is set for 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, on the road against Cloquet.
