BEMIDJI—Here's a look at activities this week at Lake Bemidji State Park. The park is located northeast of Bemidji at 3401 State Park Road NE. Parking permits are required. See park office.
10 to 11 a.m. Eagle Walk: Join a naturalist on a short journey to catch a glimpse of a Bald Eagle nest, and maybe even its inhabitants. The group will stop to learn more about the natural history of the eagle. Meet near the fish cleaning shelter. In the event of inclement weather, this program will be cancelled.
5 to 5: 30 p.m. Ojibwe Kahoot Competition! In Bemidji and surrounding communities, Ojibwe language inclusion is becoming more and more common through grassroots efforts like the Bemidji Ojibwe Language Project. Join a naturalist to learn a selection of Ojibwe words related to things that can be found in the park; then, test out your new language learning by playing a competitive Kahoot. No prior knowledge of the Ojibwe language is required. This program is ideal for anyone; an electronic device capable of connecting to WiFi is required for this activity. Meet in the Visitor Center.
7 to 9 p.m.: Candlelit Bog Walk. Experience the bog like never before: by candlelight! Luminaries will light the way along the ½-mile bog boardwalk to guide you out to Big Bog Lake, where you will find a naturalist to answer any questions you may have had along the way. The hike begins at the start of the boardwalk, a ½-mile hike from the campground. In the event of inclement weather, this program will be cancelled.
10 to 10:30 a.m. Gigoonh! Everyone knows how to play Go Fish, but can you do it in Ojibwe? Learn basic Ojibwe and play Gigoonh with fish that can be found in Lake Bemidji. Howah! Meet at the Picnic Area (look for event flag). In the event of inclement weather, this program will be moved into the Visitor Center.
2 to 3 p.m.: Junior Park Naturalist: Leaf Pounding! Work toward your Junior Park Naturalist (Pinelands) badge. Join a naturalist to learn what makes leaves so bright and colorful. Then, learn about the technique of leaf pounding to create your own beautiful artwork you can 0take home. Meet at the playground. In the event of inclement weather, this program meets inside the Visitor Center.
