GOLF: Bemidji opens season at Staples

STAPLES — Despite the wet conditions, the Bemidji High School golf team finally hit the course Saturday.

The Lumberjacks went to Vintage at Staples for their first invitational of the spring and, despite not having most of their upperclassmen, finished a respectable seventh out of 12 teams in the meet.

“It was kind of nasty but we were able to get out there,” BHS head coach Seth Knudson said. “We had a younger team today with the juniors and seniors at prom and they did pretty well.”

The Lumberjacks scored a 373 to finish seventh; Chris Washington was Bemidji’s lowest scorer with an 86 for the afternoon while Matt Gregg was a stroke behind him at 87.

Shattuck St. Mary’s edged host Staples-Motley for the team title, scoring a 303. Staples had a 305 while Albany and Crosby-Ironton tied for third at 337.

Staples’ Andrew Israelson was the medalist for the meet with a 70.

Rounding out Bemidji’s scorers on the day were Tanner Turn hit 99, Brandon Reynolds 101, Matt Larson 102 and Nick Leitner 106.

“We had a few high scores in there, and maybe the kids could have done a little better, but for our first time out on the course we did pretty well,” Knudson said.

The Lumberjacks are scheduled to return to the course Monday when they will compete at Coleraine.
