BOYS TENNIS: BHS goes 1-2 on travel-filled day

The Bemidji High School boys tennis team started Thursday in Moorhead and ended it in East Grand Forks, picking up a win over the Green Wave along the way.

The Lumberjacks were beaten in two matches to start the day, falling 4-3 to Moorhead and 5-2 to Perham in Moorhead, before rebounding to beat the Green Wave 4-3 Thursday evening after travelling up to East Grand Forks.

“We really wanted to get these matches in today so our players could gain experience,” head coach Mark Fodness said. “What hurt us most today was our uneven play and in that regard playing these matches now, despite some losses, should help us in the future.”

Spencer Konecne went unbeaten at No. 1 singles Thursday by going 3-0, including a 6-2, 6-1 win in the nightcap against EGF.

“Spencer continued his strong play so far this spring,” Fodness said. “He had a few lapses where he may have let up a bit or lost focus but he's able to minimize the damage and get back on track quickly. He's not only our strongest player but he also has by far the most match experience and it really shows.”

The Jacks could not get another singles win in the remaining three matches with EGF, but a sweep in doubles play sealed the victory. Cody Hendricks and Nick Palmer earned the win at No. 1 doubles with a 6-1, 6-1 score that was followed up by identical 6-1, 6-0 victories by Ben Hess and Kolden Michalicek at No. 2 doubles and Adam Laakso and Bailey Harris at No. 3.

In the day’s opening match, BHS took two of three in doubles but dropped three singles matches in a loss to the Spuds. Konecne earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles but the Jacks lost the remaining three singles matches in straight sets.

Hendricks and Nick Palmer claimed No. 1 doubles with a 6-2, 3-6 (10-5) win and Laakso and James Palmer won the No. 3 match 6-2, 6-1. But a close 4-6, 6-4 (10-7) loss at No. 2 doubles by Ben Hess and Michalicek secured the win for Moorhead.

Konecne once again picked up a two-set, 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles in Bemidji’s second match of the day against Perham, but the Jacks faltered in their other three singles contests.

EJ Guida and Si Hess clinched a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles but BHS dropped the other pair of doubles matches in the 5-2 loss to the Yellowjackets.

Bemidji will host Fergus Falls and Moorhead in a doubleheader Monday, April 24, that is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the BHS tennis courts.
