GIRLS BASKETBALL: Early run sparks Bemidji win

BEMIDJI -- An early 16-0 first-half run allowed the Bemidji High School girls basketball team to put their game against Crookston on cruise control on Tuesday night.

The balanced Lumberjacks got offensive contributions from almost everyone on the roster en route to a 67-48 win over the Pirates at the Bemidji High School gymnasium.

Bemidji (7-6) had an 8-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game but then Crookston (2-8) appeared poised to claw back. The Pirates tied it at 9-9 with 11 minutes, 38 seconds to play.

The Lumberjacks didn’t let them score again for what seemed like an eternity.

BHS scored 16 unanswered points in the course of the next seven minutes, including a three-pointer from Sam Edlund and a ton of steals and layups from the likes of Laura Biberdorf, Evette Morgan, Rumer Flatness and Lexi Wade. Wade hit two jumpers near the end of the run that made it 25-9 with 4:57 to play in the first half.

By the time the Pirates scored again -- on Kennedy Cwikia’s steal and layup -- they were still down by 14 points with 4:11 left in the half.

The Lumberjacks closed out the half with 15 more points -- including a pair of threes from Heather Strong -- to go into the locker room up 40-18 at halftime.

In the second half, the Pirates outscored the Lumberjacks 30-27 but by then BHS already had a nice cushion.

Bieberdorf led all scorers with 15 points, and she was the only Lumberjack in double figures. Edlund scored nine and Wade eight points. Nearly everyone else on the Lumberjacks’ roster scored at least a point -- in all, 13 players got their names in the scorebook.

The Pirates were led by Hannah Emanuel's 14 points and Emma Borowicz’s 12.

The Lumberjacks return to action Saturday, Jan. 14, when they host Little Falls.
