BOYS HOCKEY: Bemidji falls to Owatonna in overtime 2-1 in tournament opener

DULUTH – Neither Bemidji nor Owatonna could get much going in the first two periods of their game Thursday at the Heritage Hockey Classic in Duluth.

The teams skated to scoreless first and second periods before each team notched goals in the third period to force overtime.

However, Owatonna’s Peter Hampton scored the game-winning-goal just 27 seconds into the overtime period to give the Huskies a 2-1 win over the Lumberjacks in their quarterfinal game at the Duluth Heritage Sports Center.

The Lumberjacks (2-7-0) will take on Buffalo in the losers’ bracket at 1 p.m. today.

“We didn’t really start playing well until the last 10 minutes of the third period,” BHS head coach Wade Chiodo said. “At times we played with a sense of urgency but we didn’t do it for a full period until the third.”

Each team saw some decent chances in the first two periods, but Owatonna (4-4-0) struck early in the first period, when Andrew Ramart scored just 27 seconds into the frame to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

However, the Lumberjacks evened the score later in the period to force overtime on Matt Serratore’s power play goal at the 14:20 mark.

Mike Sauer and Sam Starkey assisted on the play.

That goal forced overtime, but the Huskies scored quickly to end the game.

“Their goalie played really well today,” Chiodo said of Owatonna’s Luke Ebeling, who made 24 saves. “He made some big saves on us today.”

Bemidji outshot Owatonna 25-21 in the game. BHS’s Gabe Heifort made 19 saves but took the tough-luck loss.
