Lumberjacks: Bemidji volleyball, girls soccer at home tonight; area teams also in action

BEMIDJI -- Bemidji High School sports fans have the opportunity to see three more of the Lumberjacks teams in action within the next two days as the volleyball and girls soccer teams each host Detroit Lakes today and the football team will entertain Grand Rapids on Friday.

The volleyball match will be played at the high school beginning around 7:15 p.m. while the girls soccer game will start at 7 p.m. at BSU's Chet Anderson Stadium.

The football game will also be at Chet Anderson Stadium and kickoff will be at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The BHS volleyball team opened its season Tuesday with a five-set victory at Perham. The Jacks took the first two games 25-16, 25-22 but the Yellowjackets claimed the next two sets 27-25 and 25-21. BHS battled back, however, and won the decisive fifth game 15-7.

Brylee Colligan had 13 kills and Emily Falldorf 12. Alexa Greendahl dished 28 assists while Karlie Leif and Colligan each contributed 36 digs.

The girls soccer team also is 1-0 after stopping Little Falls 3-1 a week ago. The Jacks will continue their early-season homestand Tuesday when they host East Grand Forks at the middle school field.

Bemidji's football team will have the home spotlight on Friday for its annual battle with Grand Rapids. A year ago BHS thumped the Thunderhawks 39-7 on way to a 7-3 overall record. The season came to an end in the section semifinals and in each of the three setbacks the opponent scored the winning points on its final drive.

Area teams in action

Tuesday was opening day for some of the area volleyball teams. Among the squads making their debut was Bagley which lost 25-13, 25-15, 25-19 to Sebeka. Sierrah Kaiser had six kills, two blocks and two aces. Sara Holm added four kills while Riley Thomas dished seven assists and served an ace.

Cassie Keough helped the Flyers with three kills, one block and six assists.

Blackduck defeated Staples 25-16, 25-19, 19-25, 25-11 to improve to 2-0 and Cass Lake-Bena opened its campaign with a 25-16, 28-26, 21-25, 26-24 victory over Red Lake County Central.

Today's schedule sees Cass Lake-Bena at Northome-Kelliher and Clearbrook-Gonvick hosting Win-E-Mac.

On Tuesday Bagley will visit Blackduck, Northome-Kelliher will head to Clearbrook-Gonvick and Laporte will travel to Red Lake.

The area football teams will open their seasons Friday. Bagley will have the home field advantage in its game with Badger-Greenbush-Middle River and Red Lake will entertain Fertile-Beltrami.

Blackduck will also be home with Fosston and Kelliher-Northome will host Carlton.

Cass Lake-Bena will travel to Northern Freeze and Clearbrook-Gonvick will visit Waubun.
