CROSS COUNTRY: BHS opens season in Moorhead

MOORHEAD — The Bemidji High School boys cross country team took first place and the girls team took second place in their season-opening meet at the Moorhead Invitational.

“It was a good first meet for us,” BHS head coach Ryan Aylesworth said. “We had a good showing and I’m happy with where the kids are at.”

The boys won the seven-team meet with a score of 37; hosts Moorhead were second with 40.

In the girls meet, where there were just five complete teams, the Lumberjacks scored 50 while Willmar had 22 to win the race.

A pair of Willmar runners — Samantha Hanson for the girls and Nadir Yusuf for the boys — won individual medalist honors. Hanson completed the race in 15:00 while Yusuf finished in 16:35.

The Bemidji boys won the race with all seven runners in the top 20 and three in the top ten.

Caleb Appleton was second at 16:40, Billy Freyholtz fifth at 17:10 and Isaac Berg seventh at 17:30.

The Bemidji girls also had all seven runners in the top 20 but only two in the top 10. Megan Serratore led the way with a time of 15:09 and Sadie Hamrin fifth at 15:21.

BHS will host their home meet Sept. 5 at Greenwood Golf Course in Bemidji.
