MILWAUKEE — Bemidji diver Kylei Grosfield finished fourth on the 1-meter board and ninth on the 3-meter during a pre-national meet last weekend in Milwaukee and qualified in both events for the Junior Olympics national competition.

The national meet will be July 31-Aug. 7 in Nashville, Tenn., and Grosfield will be one of 600 divers in the various age divisions.

“I’m really excited to head to Nashville and to be at the Junior Olympic nationals,” Grosfield, who will be a sophomore at Bemidji High School this fall, said. “I just turned 15 years old and will be competing in the 14-15 age class. I don’t know how many divers will be in my age class but my goal is to do my best.”

The Milwaukee meet was one of four national qualification events and the top 12 finishers at each venue qualified for the national competition.

“At Milwaukee I was competing against 28 other divers on each board,” Grosfield said. “And I did very well. There is no 3-meter board in Bemidji so I’ve gone to UND this summer for practice. I’ve only been working on the 3-meter for three months so to finish ninth at the pre-national meet is good, especially when you consider that I’m afraid of heights.”

Grosfield has been a member of the Lumberjacks varsity swimming and diving team since seventh grade and last fall she finished second at the Class A state meet. She believes that this summer’s training and competition have made her a better overall diver.

“The scoring in these big meets is harder than in high school but I am definitely receiving high scores from the judges,” she said. “At the national meet I won’t have any expectations because I already made it to the nationals and I wasn’t supposed to get this far.

“I’m just going to try and do my best and see what happens.”
