COON RAPIDS — Morgan Williams underestimated herself this time around.

The Bemidji golfer shot a 39-39-78 on day two of the state girls Class 3A golf tournament Wednesday, shaving four strokes off her score from Tuesday and finishing tied for 16th overall.

“I did way better than I thought I was going to do,” Williams said. “I was way more consistent today than I was yesterday, so it was nice to finish strong.”

The sophomore said her tee shots were much better during Wednesday’s competition, held at the Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids.

“I was happy with my game today,” she said. “I felt like yesterday I had some bad drives which set me up badly later in certain holes. Today I thought I did pretty well teeing off.”

On Tuesday Williams shot 44-38-82, giving her a two-day total of 82-79-160.

She finished tied for 16th place with Alexandria’s Natalie Amundson and Winona’s Abbe Partington.

Kenzie Nielson of New Prague finished as the state champion with a score of 135; she edged out Sarah Burnham of Wayzata, who scored a 136.

Wayzata won the overall team title with a score of 622 while Alexandria was second at 641.

In the Class A girls meet, held at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Blackduck’s Sasha Pfannenstien finished the highest out of area golfers, scoring a 114-103-217, finishing in 72nd place. Bagley-Fosston’s Sara Titera was tied for 75th at 116-106-222.

Legacy Christian Academy won the team title with a score of 718 and Christine Piwnica of Chaska Southwest Christian won the individual title at 79-80-159.

Maggie Heggerston of Pequot Lakes and Kate Smith of Detroit Lakes finished tied for the Class AA title at 143 while Detroit Lakes dominated second-place Pequot Lakes to win the team title with score of 590.
