ALEXANDRIA – There were few surprises Saturday at the high school cross country meet held here and that was good news for the Bemidji athletes.

In the boys varsity race the Lumberjacks finished third with 136 points. BHS trailed only Stillwater and St. Cloud Cathedral. Stillwater entered the race ranked No. 1 in Class 2A while St. Cloud Cathedral is the No. 2 team in Class A.

In the girls race, Bemidji’s Jenna Truedson continued her stellar season as she claimed the victory in 14:06. Truedson is rated third in the state Class 2A rankings while Megan Hasz of Alexandria is rated fourth, Bethany Hasz of Alexandria is fifth and Bethany Kozak of White Bear Lake is sixth.

All four girls were entered in Saturday’s race and they finished according to their rankings.

“Jenna ran her own race,” said BHS coach Ryan Aylesworth. “She was pushed by Megan Hasz but she was able to pull away at the end.”

Bemidji’s Dani Gronhovd was clocked in 16:38, Atomic Thorson in 16:53, Morgan Sagedahl in 17:03, Emma Brokl in 17:21 and Leanne Oakes in 18:51.

The girls finished 13th in the 21-team field. Chanhassen took top honors and Chaska was second.

Sam Carlson paced the Bemidji boys as he placed 10th in 16:24. Teammate Elias Hendrickson was 22nd in 16:50. Seth Neubeck and Kyle Sagedahl completed the course in 16:59, Adam Lewis in 17:02, Billy Freyholtz in 17:21 and Cody Freyholtz in 17:39.

“The boys all ran smart races,” Aylesworth said. “They all moved up during the race. If we run as well in the section meet as we ran Saturday we’ll be a contender for the section championship.”

Bemidji will close its regular season Oct. 16 at Greenwood Golf Course. On Oct. 25 the Lumberjacks will host the section meet, also at Greenwood.
