Bemidji girls win three events, take fifth overall at True Team

SAUK RAPIDS - Allie Heifort won the discus, Maea Wall the long jump and Jenna Truedson captured the 800 to lead the Bemidji girls track and field team to fifth place in Thursday's True Team 8-3A meet at Sauk Rapids.

Moorhead took the team title with 837 while BHS tallied 726.5.

"We're not deep enough to win the title this year but the girls gave everything they had," said Lumberjacks coach Chris Lehman. "In the True Team you need depth and with only about 30 girls everybody competed in four events and it made for a long day."

Heifort won the discus with a heave of 126-8, an effort that was only one inch off her personal best. In the shot put Heifort bettered her previous personal record by 16 inches and her 38-11 throw was rewarded with third place.

Jenna Truedson and Jamie Piepenberg of Alexandria continued their personal battle Thursday and the result was a split.

Piepenberg, a senior, won the mile in 4:59.58 and Jenna Truedson was second in 5:04.31.

The combatants traded places in the 800 as Jenna Truedson dominated the final 100 yards and won in 2:20.50. Piepenberg finished in 2:21.23.

Maea Wall also had a great day as the freshman claimed the long jump by clearing 16-7.5 and was second in the 400 with a time of 1:00.89.

Also leading the Jacks in their events with top-five efforts were Amy Carey who was fifth in the 100 (13.03) and fourth in the 200 (27.98).

Kim Truedson who was third in the 3,200 (11:24.90), Claire Laakso who was fifth in the 300 hurdles (49.97) and Amber Peterson who was third in the pole vault (8-0).

"Kim Truedson ran a wonderful two-mile race as she cut 15 seconds off her previous best," Lehman said.

The Jacks are off until May 22 when they will host the Bemidji Invitational.
