Boys golf: Spry leads Bemidji after first round of Fergus Falls tournament
FERGUS FALLS -- Leo Spry overcame 30 mile per hour winds and gloomy conditions to shoot 42-39-81 and lead the Bemidji boys golf team after Friday’s first round of the 36-hole Fergus Falls Invitational.
The meet, which attracted 15 teams, was played at Pebble Lake Golf Course where the par is 37-35-72.
“Leo had a great round,” said BHS coach Seth Knudson. “Because of the conditions all of the scores were higher than normal.”
Matt Gregg had Bemidji’s other round in the 80s as he shot 43-42-85. Sharing 91s wer Jack Johnson (48-43-91) and Jaret Lalli (47-44-91) while Chris Washington finished 47-47-94 and Matt Allen 51-45-96.
“This is a two-day meet and because of prom on Saturday some of our upperclassmen played in Friday’s tournament at Park Rapids instead of at Fergus Falls,” Knudson said. “We took a young team to Fergus and I think they did well. Leo, Jaret and Matt are freshmen, Jack and Matt are sophomores and Chris is a junior.
“We’re young and we have work to do before the section meet but we still have time to get that work in.”
The Lumberjacks will return to the course at 8:30 a.m. today for the second round of the tournament.
Bruestle leads Jacks
PARK RAPIDS -- Bemidji’s other half of Friday’s split varsity golf team played at the 12-team Cancer Invitational hosted by Park Rapids at the par 36-36-72 Headwaters Golf Course.
As a team the Lumberjacks shot 342 and leading the squad was Sam Bruestle who finished 44-39-83. Brandon Reynolds shot 39-45-84, Isaac Bleser shot 44-42-86 and Ben Christopher finished 44-44-88.
