Moorhead rallies for win against Bemidji girls basketball

Moorhead's furious comeback in the second half gave the Spuds a 63-57 victory over Bemidji in girls basketball play on Tuesday in Moorhead.

The Lumberjacks led by nine points late in the game, but only scored two points in the final four minutes.

"We couldn't hang on to the ball," Bemidji coach Rick Kehoe said. "We had too many turnovers."

The Spuds charged forward in the second half, scoring 40 points while holding Bemidji to just 23.

Kelli Tonn led the Spuds with 21 points and finished the game with three 3-point buckets.

Hali Stephenson added 13 points for Moorhead.

The Lumberjacks controlled the pace throughout the first half, holding a 32-23 lead over the Spuds at halftime.

"We ran the offense pretty smoothly," Kehoe said. "We didn't turn the ball over early on."

Jess Yost led Bemidji with 18 points, including eight field goals.

"Jess played well inside," Kehoe said. "She got into some foul trouble in the first half, but she bounced back."

Yost finished with four fouls.

Cheyenne Woods nearly equaled Yost by scoring 17 points. Jenna Sagedahl chipped in eight points for Bemidji.

Bemidji continued to play well to start the second half, but Moorhead handcuffed the Lumberjack's offense during its late rally.

"We just panicked a little bit," Kehoe said. "We couldn't sink a shot."

The game was Bemidji's final road game of the season. The Lumberjacks host Duluth Denfeld in the final game of the regular season on Friday.
