Moorhead downs Bemidji in boys basketball

Playing at Moorhead is a difficult task and when the Spuds are hitting most of their field goal attempts there isn't much an opponent can do.

"We actually had a good defensive effort but Moorhead made all of its shots and we missed some of ours," said Bemidji boys basketball coach Jeff Brown after his team dropped a 74-57 decision Saturday at Moorhead.

"We played well, both offensively and defensively. But Moorhead played very well."

The Spuds drained 32 shots, including seven from 3-point land, and each time the Lumberjacks mounted a comeback Moorhead would answer.

"We would get into a hole, fight our way back only to see Moorhead take control again by hitting its shots," Brown said. "Eventually we just ran out of steam."

Bemidji trailed 35-26 at intermission but drew within five points midway through the second half.

In a matter of minutes, however, Moorhead was ahead by 15 and the outcome was decided.

"I was pleased with our effort," Brown said. "Defensively we did a good job and we only had 10 turnovers. That's not bad when you play at Moorhead.

"But Moorhead seemed to be able to find the open guy and most of the time he made the shot."

Carey Woods had 28 points and Cody Rutledge 10 to lead the Jacks. JC Cervenka added seven and Mitch Brown six.

Bemidji (6-4) returns to action Tuesday when it entertains Thief River Falls at the BHS?gymnasium.
