Bemidji boys soccer team up to challenge in 3-0 win

The Bemidji boys soccer team followed Thursday's lackluster performance at Hibbing with a workmanlike effort Saturday and was rewarded with a 3-0 home victory over Brainerd.

"We played under control and did what we wanted to do," said BHS coach Rick Toward. "Coming off a horrible effort at Hibbing (a 3-2 loss) we challenged ourselves on Saturday and we responded to the challenge.

"We weren't sharp at Hibbing but (Saturday) we were in better form."

The Lumberjacks scored the only goal they would need midway through the first half when Zach Jones capped a corner kick opportunity with a close-range shot inside the left post.

Bemidji's continual pressure forced Brainerd to kick the ball past the end line and the Lumberjacks were awarded the corner kick. Kyle Fodness took the boot and sent the ball to the box where Nick Gorick gained possession. Gorick danced through the Warriors defense long enough to give Jones time to get open and one pass later Jones booted the ball past goalie Brandon Hedlund.

BHS continued to apply the pressure in the second stanza and seven minutes into the period Fodness delivered another corner kick. This time Matt Bitter sailed above the pack and the sophomore scored with a header.

With 11 minutes to play the Lumberjacks iced the win as Isak Sommer floated a pass to Fodness and, after deking the lone defender, Fodness ripped a 10-yard shot past Hedlund.

"We knew that Brainerd has many kids in the program but it hasn't had much success during the past few seasons," Toward said. "When you play a team like that you want to attack and close the game out early. And we did that."

Bemidji, 8-4, returns to the pitch Tuesday when it visits Moorhead for a 5 p.m. game.
