Elk River next for BHS softball team in section playoffs

The Bemidji softball team, fresh off Wednesday's 14-4 pasting of Monticello, will continue its quest for the Section 8-3A championship 11 a.m. Monday when it tangles with Elk River.

Monday's other opening playoff game sees top-ranked Brainerd (18-0) facing No. 5 Big Lake (14-7).

The Lumberjacks (13-6) own the section's third seed while Elk River (15-6) is rated second.

The four remaining teams all won their games on Wednesday and advanced to Monday's double-elimination final four. Brainerd, as a reward for earning the top seed, will host the action and the Warriors will retain the home-field advantage as long as they remain in the tournament.

In Wednesday's preliminary round No. 6 Monticello slammed No. 11 Moorhead 12-2, No. 10 St. Cloud Tech upset No. 7 St. Cloud Apollo 5-4 and No. 9 Sauk Rapids downed No. 8 Sartell 7-4.

In the second round of the lower bracket Bemidji dismantled Monticello 14-4 in five innings and Elk River squeaked past St. Cloud Tech 2-1.

The upper-bracket results saw Brainerd blank Sauk Rapids 10-0 and Big Lake outgun No. 4 Alexandria 14-8.

No matter how the Lumberjacks fare against Elk River they will play a second game on Monday. If BHS tops the Elks it will take on the Brainerd-Big Lake winner at 2 p.m. If the Jacks lose their first game they will be involved in an elimination contest against the Brainerd-Big Lake loser.

Monday's survivors will continue their tournament action June 1.
