Follis, Leif pace Jacks baseball team in victory at Hibbing

Tyler Follis ripped four hits and Collin Leif three to power the Bemidji baseball team to a 7-5 victory Thursday at Hibbing.

Pitcher Zach Solheim was the beneficiary of a 13-hit attach led by Follis and Leif as Solheim earned the victory with four innings of work.

Trent Baker tossed the final three frames for the save.

"It was good to be back on the diamond," said BHS coach Mike Fogelson whose team has been off since a 15-6 home loss to Grand Rapids on April 12.

"It felt like this was our first time outside but it didn't take long for us to get in the swing of things."

After spotting the Bluejackets a 2-0 cushion the Lumberjacks came alive in the fourth.

With one out Solheim belted a double and Kris Berndt was safe on an error. Jeremiah Graves promptly bunted home Solheim and Mitchell Hendricks and Leif followed with RBI singles.

Follis kept the rally going with a 2-run double and, after gaining third courtesy of a passed ball, Follis scored on a balk.

The home team drew within 6-4 with a pair in the fifth but the Jacks scored an insurance tally in the upper sixth when Cody Rutledge doubled and Cody Jenkins singled him home.

"Defensively we were sound, offensively we had 13 hits and, even though our pitchers issued 11 walks, it was a very tight strike zone and I thought they threw well," Fogelson said.

Bemidji, 4-1, returns to the diamond Monday when it visits Grand Forks Red River for a 3 p.m. start.

In Thursday's junior varsity game, Ryan Hirt threw a 5-inning no-hitter and had eight strikeouts in Bemidji's 13-0 victory.
